About Wayne State
Wayne State University traces its roots to 1868, when Civil War veterans founded the Detroit Medical College, and it has grown with the city ever since. Today it is a Carnegie R1 public research university and part of Michigan's University Research Corridor with Michigan, Michigan State and Michigan Tech. Its 203-acre main campus sits in Midtown Detroit, and in fall 2026 it enrolled 24,182 students, including 16,421 undergraduates.
More than 375 programs are spread across 13 schools and colleges, including the Mike Ilitch School of Business, the College of Engineering, the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the School of Medicine, the Law School and the Irvin D. Reid Honors College. The most popular undergraduate majors are psychology, computer science, biological sciences, finance and public health. Research expenditures were $291.7 million in fiscal 2024, and Wayne State researchers built the first operational mechanical heart and synthesised AZT, the first approved HIV drug.
Admission is holistic and broad: Wayne State admitted about 84% of first-year applicants for fall 2025, and tests are optional. It suits students who want an affordable, genuinely urban university with strong health-science and professional pathways and close ties to Detroit's employers.
