About AUCA
The American University of Central Asia began in 1993 as the Kyrgyz-American School inside the Kyrgyz State National University, became independent in 1997 as the American University in Kyrgyzstan, and took its current name in 2002 to reflect a student body drawn from across the region. It describes itself as an international, multi-disciplinary learning community in the American liberal arts tradition, teaching mainly in English, with a credit-hour system and a general education core.
AUCA was the first university in Central Asia to offer US-accredited liberal arts degrees, through a partnership with Bard College in New York launched in 2009, which has granted Bard BA degrees in eleven AUCA programmes since 2011. It offers 13 undergraduate majors, from Anthropology and International Development and International and Business Law to Software Engineering, Applied Mathematics and Informatics, and Television, Cinema and Media Arts, plus master's programmes including an MBA, an LL.M. and an MSc in Economics. Since 2015 it has been based in a purpose-built four-storey campus south of central Bishkek, organised around a central forum.
The university is small and selective in its own way: every applicant must prove English and academic ability through AUCA's own admissions exam or the SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo. It suits students from Central Asia and beyond who want an American-style, discussion-heavy education, exchange opportunities through the Open Society University Network, and a close link to the region's policy, NGO and business world.

Through the AUCA-Bard partnership, students in many majors can graduate with a Bard College liberal arts degree accredited in the US as well as a Kyrgyz national diploma.
AUCA offers over 50 exchange programmes in more than 24 countries and is a member of the Open Society University Network (OSUN).

AUCA does not publish an acceptance rate. Admission depends on meeting the minimum English score and the department's minimum scores on the AUCA math and essay exams (or SAT/ACT equivalents).

How to apply
Apply online at applyonline.auca.kg (or send the paper form) with a statement of purpose of up to 700 words, English and academic test results, school documents and passport copies. International applicants (except citizens of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Russia and Belarus) must also register on the Kyrgyz Ministry of Higher Education's EduGate portal; AUCA's visa coordinator helps full-time students obtain a student visa.
What admissions looks for
- Sufficient English: at least ELPT 430, IELTS 4.0, TOEFL iBT 39 or Duolingo 95, with Intensive English for those near the minimum.
- Academic ability shown on the AUCA essay and mathematics exams or the SAT/ACT, with higher math minimums for quantitative majors.
- A statement of purpose explaining why you chose your programme, how AUCA fits your life goals and what you are most enthusiastic about.
- For Kyrgyz and CIS applicants, olympiad diplomas and (for Kyrgyz citizens) a Republic Test score above the Ministry's threshold.
Tips for applying to AUCA
- 1 Check your programme's math minimum first: Software Engineering and Applied Mathematics need 40 on the AUCA math test (about SAT Math 530), double most other majors.
- 2 If you have a strong SAT or ACT score, you can submit it instead of sitting AUCA's own exam; report scores to AUCA code 5825 (SAT) or 5479 (ACT).
- 3 Treat the 700-word statement of purpose seriously: it is the one place to explain your goals and interests in your own words.
- 4 Apply for financial aid at the same time as admission: aid awarded in the first year usually stays the same for later years if you meet renewal conditions.
- 5 Kyrgyz applicants should look at AUCA's own competitions (Brain Ring, the math olympiad, the law debate, STREAM), which award up to 100% tuition discounts.

The Open Society Institute scholarship covers 70-90% of tuition for students from CIS countries other than Kyrgyzstan and Russia, and there are sibling (50%), orphan and disability (up to 90%) discounts. Student life
AUCA's campus is a single modern building opened in 2015, designed by New York architect Henry Myerberg around a central forum, with geothermal heating, indoor gyms, a TV studio and an environmental chemistry lab. Most students live at home or rent in Bishkek; international students and freshmen are encouraged to live in the International Dormitory in the 6th Microdistrict, 10-15 minutes away, where residents of different nationalities share rooms under a cultural-mix policy and cook for themselves. Student life centres on clubs, civic projects backed by the Student Initiative Development Program, and small research and travel grants from the student-run Student Intellectual Life Committee.

Location
Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, is a gateway to the Tien Shan mountains and a former Silk Road trading post with a strong Soviet-era legacy; AUCA calls it Central Asia's most hospitable city. The country is about 90% mountains, with peaks over 7,000 metres and glacial lakes. AUCA's campus is south of the city centre on Aaly Tokombaev Street, and Manas International Airport is about a 25-minute drive from the centre.

Frequently asked questions
Does AUCA teach in English?
Yes. AUCA teaches primarily in English, and applicants must meet a minimum English score (for example IELTS 4.0 or Duolingo 95); students near the minimum take Intensive English in their first year.
Can I use the SAT instead of the AUCA entrance exam?
