About Greenwich

The University of Greenwich began in 1890 as Woolwich Polytechnic, the second polytechnic in the UK, became Thames Polytechnic in 1970 and gained university status in 1992. Its main campus sits in the Old Royal Naval College, a World Heritage Site on the Thames in Greenwich; a second London campus at Avery Hill in Eltham is the base for nursing, health and sport, and the Medway Campus in Chatham Maritime, Kent, a former Royal Navy base, houses pharmacy, science and engineering.

On 1 August 2026 the merger of Greenwich and the University of Kent legally completed, creating the London and South East University Group (LASE), which launched officially on 7 September 2026 and which the two universities describe as the UK's first 'super-university'. Students still apply to, study at and graduate from Greenwich, and can now use all four campuses and the libraries across the group.

Teaching is organised in Greenwich Business School and three faculties: Education, Health and Human Sciences; Engineering and Science; and Law, Arts and Social Sciences. Degrees are practical and often accredited: BCS for Computer Science, RIBA Part 1 for Architecture, BPS for Psychology, NMC for Nursing, and ACCA exemptions for Accounting and Finance. Offers are made in UCAS tariff points, typically 112 to 128, and the university holds TEF Gold. It suits students who want applied, career-linked study in London with cheaper halls than many central-London universities.
