About Roma Tre

Roma Tre University was established in 1992 as Rome's third state university, and it describes itself as 'a young university for young people'. From the start it grew by restoring and reusing abandoned industrial buildings in the Ostiense district in the south of the city, turning them into teaching and research hubs, and it has since become one of Rome's largest universities.

In 2026 it had 39,092 students, including 36,603 on degree programmes and 587 doctoral candidates, and 989 teaching staff. Its 13 departments, four of them named national 'departments of excellence', are Architecture; Business Economics; Civil, Computer Science and Aeronautical Technologies Engineering; Economics; Education; Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures; Humanities; Industrial, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering; Law; Mathematics and Physics; Philosophy, Communication and Performing Arts; Political Science; and Science. Together they run 34 bachelor's, 52 master's and single-cycle programmes and 27 PhD programmes.

Bachelor's teaching is in Italian, while English-taught options are concentrated at master's level, in fields such as Biomedical Engineering, International Studies, Architecture restoration and coastal and ocean engineering. Roma Tre suits students who want a large public university in Rome with income-based fees and strong programmes in law, economics, the arts and engineering.

Why students choose Roma Tre

01

02

03

Four of the 13 departments have been named national departments of excellence by the ministry.

04

Master's degrees and curricula taught in English include Biomedical Engineering, International Studies, Applied Artificial Intelligence and Global Legal Studies.

How to apply

All applicants register on GOMP, Roma Tre's student portal, and follow the admission notice (bando) for their programme. Italian and EU citizens and non-EU citizens legally resident in Italy apply directly to the university. Non-EU citizens living abroad who need a visa must also submit a pre-enrolment on Universitaly, uploading the same documents on Universitaly and GOMP; once Roma Tre validates it they apply for a study visa, take the Italian test if not exempt, and complete enrolment in person with original documents after arrival.

What admissions looks for

  • A pass in the programme's admission or assessment test, and a good enough ranking for restricted-access courses.
  • Italian at B2 level for non-EU visa applicants on Italian-taught programmes.
  • For master's degrees, a relevant bachelor's degree and a positive preliminary evaluation of your previous studies by the department.

  3. 3 Check each admission notice for places reserved for non-EU applicants living abroad; they have their own ranking list.
  4. 4 Apply to DiSCo Lazio for regional scholarships and housing; winners are exempt from the enrolment contribution.
