RNCM is an independent specialist conservatoire based on Oxford Road in Manchester. It was established in 1973 when two earlier Manchester music schools merged. Applications for RNCM’s main performance degrees are made through UCAS Conservatoires and are assessed by programme and principal study. Audition is fundamental: applicants to the standard classical BMus must demonstrate performance or composition ability and potential at approximately ABRSM Grade 8 standard. For 2027 entry, the published on-time deadline for both the BMus and MMus is 1 October 2026. RNCM was still considering late applications for 2026 entry as of August 2026, but applicants should contact Admissions before relying on late availability. The standard four-year BMus requires applicants to be at least 18 by 31 December in the entry year. Its published academic baseline is two GCE A levels at grade E or above, normally including Music, plus three GCSE subjects at grades 9–4 or accepted equivalents. International qualifications are evaluated for equivalence. Applicants from outside UKVI-defined majority English-speaking countries normally need IELTS 5.5 in every component or an accepted equivalent for this BMus route. MMus applicants must audition and normally hold a good degree, usually in music, or an equivalent qualification. They must submit an undergraduate transcript and a referenced writing sample of no more than 1,000 words. The standard MMus English requirement is IELTS 6.0, with no component below 5.5, although some options require 6.5 or 7.0. Requirements vary for direct entry, conducting, composition, research degrees and individual instruments. Candidates should therefore use the current course and audition pages for their exact specialism. The published initial UCAS Conservatoires application charge for 2027 is £34.50; RNCM lists separate audition charges of £80 for a single principal study and £120 for joint principal study.

Undergraduate study centres on four-year Bachelor of Music with Honours routes. The classical BMus combines three main elements: Principal Study, Career Development, and Academic Studies. Instrumentalists, singers and composers receive individual or specialist tuition alongside group classes, masterclasses, ensemble work and performance opportunities. Optional practical and vocational subjects allow some tailoring. A limited three-year route through direct entry to Year 2 is available only to applicants with suitable prior higher-education-level music study and the required audition and interview standard. RNCM also offers a BMus in Popular Music. Across its undergraduate provision, the emphasis is not solely on stagecraft: professional development, independent projects and industry experience are part of the curriculum. Every undergraduate undertakes at least one work-experience placement, according to RNCM. At graduate level, the Master of Music is available as a two-year programme or a one-year intensive programme, except that the intensive format is unavailable for conducting. Principal Study may focus on composition, conducting, performance or popular music. Students can complement this with vocational, practical and research-based electives. Research-related options include artistic research, musicology, music education and music psychology, while professional placement and audition preparation are among the vocational choices. Doctoral study covers areas including musicology, music psychology, music education, composition and practice-led performance research. Applicants should examine the precise course page rather than assume that requirements transfer between pathways: performance portfolios, compositions, research proposals and academic writing are evaluated differently. This is an academically demanding conservatoire model in which technical development, critical reflection and professional practice reinforce one another.

Student Life & Environment

Student life is shaped by rehearsals, practice, performances and collaboration across a compact specialist community. RNCM’s concert hall and theatre host public events, while College activity also includes orchestral, operatic, chamber, solo and student-led projects. This creates regular contact between formal study and live production, although prospective students should account for the time demands of practice, evening performances and ensemble schedules. Sir Charles Groves Hall of Residence is immediately next to RNCM and is managed by Unite Students. For 2026 offer holders, RNCM stated that new students accepting by 10 February were automatically allocated a room; late applicants were not guaranteed one. That deadline was specific to the 2026 offer cycle and should not be assumed for later entry. Students may instead use private accommodation around Manchester. Support is tailored in part to musicians’ needs. RNCM’s Health and Wellbeing Hub includes disability and wellbeing advisers, counsellors, English-language support and Alexander Technique provision. RNCM is at 124 Oxford Road, about one mile south of Manchester city centre, at the corner of Oxford Road and Booth Street West. This places it within Manchester’s main higher-education and cultural corridor rather than on an isolated residential campus. The immediate area has other university buildings, student housing and everyday services, while central Manchester’s performance venues, shops and nightlife are accessible by foot or bus. Public transport is the practical default. Frequent buses connect the city centre with stops within a five-minute walk of RNCM. Manchester Oxford Road railway station is approximately half a mile away, which RNCM estimates as a 13-minute walk. St Peter’s Square tram stop and Manchester Piccadilly station are each about 0.8 miles away. Students travelling regularly should consult current Bee Network fares and schedules rather than rely on static route information. The location suits students who want an urban conservatoire experience and access to a large regional music economy. It also brings normal city-centre considerations, including traffic, housing competition and variable private rents. RNCM has no general daytime public parking on weekdays or Saturdays before 5 p.m., reinforcing the value of walking, cycling and public transport.

Costs & Career Outcomes

RNCM publishes fees by academic year, fee status, programme and year of study. For 2026/27, the annual Home fee for the standard BMus is £9,790. The corresponding international BMus schedule is £29,950 in Years 1 and 2, £29,650 in Year 3 and £28,100 in Year 4. Vocal Studies and Opera variants cost more. Graduate fees vary substantially: for example, the standard two-year MMus is listed at £13,950 in Year 1 and £13,250 in Year 2 for Home students, compared with £31,900 and £30,500 for international students. All published fees are subject to annual review, so applicants should budget across the full course rather than multiply one year’s figure unchanged. Fee status depends on nationality, residency and UK rules, not simply citizenship. International students needing a Student visa should also check deposit, visa, health-surcharge and living-cost requirements. RNCM says it distributes more than £3 million annually through scholarships and bursaries, but eligibility and duration differ; an award should not be assumed until confirmed in writing. Housing and living expenses are additional. Sir Charles Groves Hall includes utilities and Wi-Fi, but current room prices depend on contract and room type. RNCM’s detailed public living-cost illustration uses December 2023 prices, so it is too old to treat as a 2026 budget. Career preparation is integrated rather than guaranteed employment. Every undergraduate completes a work-experience placement, with fields ranging from performance and teaching to administration, marketing and community education.
