Student Life & Environment

Student life is closely tied to music-making. Rehearsals, ensemble placements, masterclasses, concerts and independent practice form a substantial part of the community experience. RCM also directs students to its Students’ Union and student-support services, while its facilities include performance spaces, studios, practice areas, a library, a museum and a campus café. Housing is not located on the South Kensington teaching site. Prince Consort Village, the College’s dedicated hall in West London, provides studio apartments, en-suite rooms and standard rooms designed for music students. It is managed by Campus Living Villages, and prospective residents register their interest with that operator rather than with RCM. The College also identifies partner halls and offers guidance concerning private rentals. Places, prices and contract conditions should be confirmed directly for the intended year. Students who prefer other arrangements can consider nearby managed residences or London’s broader private market. RCM notes that many postgraduate and returning students rent privately. This offers independence but requires attention to travel time, tenancy terms and right-to-rent requirements. Location & Surroundings

The College occupies a central South Kensington site on Prince Consort Road, opposite the Royal Albert Hall. The surrounding district places students near major cultural institutions, including museums, galleries and performance venues, while Hyde Park is also nearby. This setting can make concerts, exhibitions and other arts activity accessible around study commitments. South Kensington has cafés, restaurants, shops, banks and other everyday services. Nearby London Underground stations and bus routes connect the area with central and west London, mainline railway terminals and Heathrow Airport. Students living at Prince Consort Village commute from West London, while those renting elsewhere should assess travel time and late-evening transport carefully because rehearsals and performances may finish outside conventional teaching hours. London’s scale is both an advantage and a practical consideration. Students can access a broad cultural and professional environment across the city, but housing location materially affects cost, commuting and daily routines. Prospective students should compare accommodation prices and transport connections rather than assuming they will live within walking distance of the College.

Costs & Career Outcomes

Tuition varies by qualification and fee status. For 2026–27, the published full-time Bachelor of Music fee is £9,790 for Home students and £31,300 for new Overseas students. RCM warns that tuition is reviewed annually, normally increasing by 2% to 7%, including for continuing students, although the Home BMus follows the applicable government fee cap. Applicants should use the detailed fee schedule for their exact course and year rather than applying the BMus figures to postgraduate study. Additional costs can include an instrument and its maintenance, accommodation, food, local travel, visa charges and international travel. RCM’s current guidance estimates that most students need to budget at least £13,800 annually for London living costs and cautions that a larger amount may be necessary for comfort or unexpected expenses. This is guidance, not a guaranteed personal budget. Applicants to performance and composition courses beginning in 2026 or 2027 are automatically considered for RCM merit scholarships through their audition, video submission, portfolio or interview; no separate scholarship application is required. Availability and value are not guaranteed. Home undergraduates may also investigate UK student-finance eligibility. Career preparation is music-sector focused. The Creative Careers Centre offers guidance, professional engagements, teaching opportunities and support with practical subjects such as biographies, programming, project management, promotion and freelance work.
