How Admissions Work
For the August 2026 intake, CMI accepted applications online from 2 March through 4 April 2026; that cycle is now closed. The common nationwide entrance examination was held on 2 May 2026, and the academic session began on 3 August. Future applicants should use these dates only as a description of the 2026–27 cycle and wait for CMI to publish the next schedule. BS applicants needed to have passed, or expected to pass in 2026, Standard 12 or an equivalent recognized-board examination. One common examination covered all BS (Honours) pathways; students did not select their final pathway when applying. Certain strong performers in designated national mathematics, physics or informatics Olympiad processes could request exemption from the written BS examination, subject to confirmation by the Admissions Committee. MSc applicants required an undergraduate degree and relevant preparation: mathematics for MSc Mathematics, computer science for MSc Computer Science, or mathematics, statistics or computer science for MSc Data Science. The 2026 MSc Mathematics process included a written examination followed by an online interview; interviews for other non-PhD programs were discretionary. All PhD selections involved an interview for shortlisted candidates. The institute also recognized specified national examinations, including NBHM, GATE, JEST and UGC-CSIR NET, as alternative routes to PhD interview consideration in relevant disciplines. Academic Experience
The four-year BS (Honours) structure is unusually mathematics-intensive. All undergraduates begin with a shared first semester covering algebra, analysis, English, programming and classical mechanics. Students then choose computer science or physics as a second subject, and after the fourth semester select mathematics, computer science or physics as their specialization. The complete honours degree requires at least 144 credits. A three-year exit is available after 112 credits, leading to a BSc in mathematics and computer science or mathematics and physics. Students in any honours pathway may complete a 20-credit minor in data science. CMI's two-year MSc programs each require at least 64 credits. MSc Mathematics combines graduate algebra, analysis and topology with directed reading, electives and a final-semester thesis. MSc Computer Science includes foundations such as algorithms, theory of computation and mathematical logic, followed by electives and a substantial project or dissertation. MSc Data Science integrates mathematics, statistics and computing with machine learning, databases, big-data methods and advanced electives. Published schedules may change modestly through Academic Council decisions. Doctoral study is available in mathematics, computer science and physics, including a part-time route. Full-time PhD students normally complete one to two years of compulsory coursework and a qualifying examination before beginning supervised research. CMI also reports close academic ties with the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Chennai, including jointly conducted seminars and courses and opportunities to work with faculty at either institution.

Student Life & Environment
CMI offers a compact, residential environment for BS students. Its official undergraduate page says the BS program is fully residential and students are accommodated in the on-campus hostel. The 2026 brochure separately states that hostel accommodation is unavailable to MSc Data Science students, so applicants should not assume that housing arrangements are identical across programs. PhD research scholars may stay in the hostel during their first year. Housing availability for other master's students should be reconfirmed directly for the relevant intake. The Siruseri campus includes academic space, a library block and student housing. Students have access to a computer laboratory, high-speed internet and campus-wide wireless connectivity. Academic life extends beyond scheduled classes through research seminars, visiting lectures, schools and workshops in mathematics, computer science and physics. Location & Surroundings
CMI is in the SIPCOT Information Technology Park at Siruseri, on Old Mahabalipuram Road, also called Rajiv Gandhi Salai or Chennai's IT corridor. Although the database city is Chennai, the institution describes Siruseri as being on the city's southern outskirts. This distinction matters for daily travel, internships and off-campus housing. CMI's directions place the campus approximately 35 kilometres from Chennai Central railway station and about 30 kilometres from Chennai International Airport. Thiruvanmiyur is identified as the nearest station on Chennai's MRTS suburban rail system, but it is not adjacent to the campus; onward road transport is required. Public buses serve the SIPCOT area, while routes and travel times depend on the point of origin and traffic conditions. The campus moved to Siruseri in October 2005 and occupies about five acres. Its setting offers proximity to companies along the OMR technology corridor, but it is removed from central Chennai. Students considering the MSc Data Science program in particular should investigate commuting and nearby rental options because that program does not include campus hostel accommodation.
Costs & Career Outcomes
For 2026–27, tuition was INR 125,000 per semester for the BS (Honours), MSc Mathematics and MSc Computer Science programs. MSc Data Science tuition was INR 250,000 per semester, and its students were not offered hostel accommodation. CMI's current undergraduate page listed combined hostel, mess and establishment charges of INR 31,000 per semester, while noting that these charges are adjusted periodically. Applicants should request an updated invoice before budgeting. The 2026 brochure advertised approximately 30–35 full-tuition scholarships for BS students, plus a limited number of INR 5,000 monthly fellowships. It also described income-based BS tuition waivers: a 100% waiver at annual family income of INR 800,000 or less and a 50% waiver at INR 1.2 million or less. MSc Mathematics and Computer Science had full-tuition scholarships, limited INR 6,000 monthly fellowships and separate income-based partial waivers. Scholarship continuation after the first semester depended on satisfactory academic performance. PhD students paid no tuition and received published stipends, but those amounts may be revised periodically. CMI does not publish a single current placement rate or salary figure on the cited pages.
