About NIT Trichy

NIT Tiruchirappalli began on 13 July 1964 as the Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu. It became a deemed university and was renamed National Institute of Technology in 2003, and an Act of Parliament made it an Institution of National Importance in 2007. The campus is at Thuvakudi on the Trichy-Thanjavur national highway, 17 km from Tiruchirappalli railway junction.

Teaching is organised in departments including Architecture, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Instrumentation and Control, Mechanical, Metallurgical and Materials, and Production Engineering, alongside the sciences, Computer Applications, Humanities and Management Studies. Undergraduates take four-year B.Tech degrees, a five-year B.Arch or a B.Sc. B.Ed.; postgraduates take M.Tech, M.Arch, M.Sc., MCA, MBA, MA, MS (by Research) and PhD programmes.

In its NIRF 2026 data the institute reported about 4,600 undergraduates, 1,750 master's students and 880 PhD scholars. It has been India's top NIT in the NIRF Engineering ranking and has a strong corporate alumni network, including the chairman of Tata Sons. It suits students with good JEE (Main) ranks who want a large, fully residential engineering campus with serious placement outcomes.

2027 entry via JEE (Main) 2027 and JoSAA/CSAB 2027 (details shown are from the 2026 cycle)

Selectivity

NIT Trichy does not publish an acceptance rate. B.Tech and B.Arch seats for Indian students are allotted by JEE (Main) rank and category through JoSAA and CSAB counselling; the sanctioned intake for 2024-25 was 1,014 on four-year and 57 on five-year programmes. Foreign nationals, PIO, OCI and NRI students are admitted separately under the DASA scheme.

Testing Required: JEE (Main) for Indian students (B.Arch also uses the JEE (Main) architecture paper). International applicants are admitted under DASA, counselled jointly with the CSAB special rounds.

Typical entry requirements

Previous cycle: after JoSAA/CSAB/DASA allotment, first-year UG students completed online verification and hostel fee payment.

NIT Trichy admits through national counselling rather than its own deadlines. JEE (Main) 2027 and JoSAA/CSAB/DASA 2027 schedules had not been published on the pages checked; JEE (Main) is normally held in January and April, with counselling from June.

How to apply

Indian students take JEE (Main) and choose NIT Trichy programmes in JoSAA (and later CSAB) counselling, then complete online reporting and physical verification at the institute. International students register for DASA; undergraduate DASA seats are allotted alongside the CSAB special rounds. Fees are paid through the Samarth portal and hostel fees through SBI Collect.

What admissions looks for

  • A strong JEE (Main) rank: seats are allotted by rank and category in JoSAA and CSAB counselling.
  • A pass in Class XII (or equivalent) with the subjects required for engineering or architecture.
  • For international students, eligibility under the DASA scheme for foreign nationals, PIO, OCI and NRIs.

Tips for applying to NIT Trichy

  1. 1 If you are an NRI, OCI or foreign national, look at DASA rather than JoSAA: fees are in US dollars and seats are separate.
  2. 2 Income-based remission is generous: families under Rs 1 lakh a year pay no tuition and those under Rs 5 lakh pay one third, but you must submit the income certificate before paying fees.
  3. 3 Budget for the first semester: B.Tech fees are Rs 1,25,550 plus about Rs 60,000 in hostel and mess charges for new general-category students.
  4. 4 Consider less-crowded branches such as Instrumentation and Control, Production or Metallurgical Engineering, which share the same placement system.
