About ITS

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) began on 10 November 1957, when President Soekarno signed the charter of a small engineering college in Surabaya with just two departments, mechanical and civil engineering. Its name, 'Tenth of November', honours the 1945 Battle of Surabaya. It became a state institute of technology in 1960 and since 2014 has been a legal-entity state university (PTNBH) with autonomy over its academic and financial affairs.

ITS is best known for engineering with a practical, maritime flavour: naval architecture and marine technology, electrical and informatics engineering, and applied science. Teaching is organised into faculties of Science and Data Analytics; Industrial Technology and System Engineering; Civil, Planning and Geo Engineering; Marine Technology; Intelligent Electrical and Informatics Technology; Creative Design and Digital Business; and Medicine and Health, plus a vocational faculty and a management and technology school. Nearly all undergraduate teaching happens on the main Sukolilo campus in eastern Surabaya.

Most programmes are taught in Indonesian, but the International Undergraduate Program (IUP) teaches selected degrees in English and builds in joint- and double-degree options with partners such as Curtin, Queensland, Essex and NTUST. ITS suits students who like building things, from solar boats and robots to electric scooters, and who want an Indonesian degree with a path abroad.

University motto

Why students choose ITS

01

The International Undergraduate Program teaches degrees such as Statistics, Information Systems and Urban and Regional Planning in English, with 2+2 or 3+1 double-degree routes to partners including Curtin University and the University of Queensland.

02

Fast-track options let some IUP students add a partner master's degree, for example a 3+1+1 bachelor's and MSc route with the University of Essex in Statistics or Data Science.

03

Student teams compete internationally in ship design, robotics and energy-efficient cars; in 2026 ITS won the overall championship at the Indonesian Ship Contest for the third year running.

04

Fees are low by international standards: non-Indonesians pay USD 2,400 per semester in the English-taught IUP, and about IDR 15 million per semester on regular Indonesian-taught bachelor's programmes.

Admissions

International Undergraduate Program, 2026 intake (2027 schedule not yet published)

Selectivity

ITS does not publish an admit rate. IUP places are limited per programme: for the 2026 fourth application period, for example, Statistics had 18 places, Urban and Regional Planning 15, and Geomatics Engineering and Information Systems 13 each, while several programmes had already closed.

Testing Depends on the application period. Batch 1 is based on school reports, IGCSE, A-levels or IB. Batches 2 and 3 require ITS's own online academic test (Tes SMITS: academic potential and mathematics). Batch 4 uses UTBK-SNBT or SMITS scores. All IUP applicants attend an online interview.

Typical entry requirements

Secondary schoolAt least 12 years of formal schooling, graduating no more than three years before entry (2024, 2025 or 2026 graduates for the 2026 intake)
A-levels / IB (Batch 1)A-levels AAB including Mathematics and Physics, or the IB Diploma with Mathematics AA and Physics
Cambridge IGCSE (Batch 1)IGCSE scores including Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics
Indonesian applicants (regular programmes)National routes SNBP (school record) and SNBT (UTBK test), or ITS's own SMITS routes
English languageIELTS 6 · TOEFL iBT 61 IUP minimums. Also accepted: TOEFL ITP 500, TOEFL CBT 173, TOEIC 575, Duolingo 95, or the TEFL test run by the ITS Language Center. International applicants to regular programmes, which are taught in Indonesian, must first complete a one-year Indonesian language course at ITS.

How to apply

Create a myITS Admission account at admission.its.ac.id, fill in your details and choose up to two IUP study programmes in order of priority. Upload school reports or exam results, an English certificate, a free-format motivation letter, a signed parents' commitment letter and your passport, then pay the registration fee (USD 100 for non-Indonesians, IDR 1,000,000 for Indonesians). Depending on the batch, you then sit the SMITS online test, and all applicants have an online interview.

What admissions looks for

  • Strong academic potential, shown through school reports, IGCSE, A-level or IB results, or the SMITS academic test.
  • Solid mathematics and physics: A-level and IB applicants need both, and the SMITS test includes a mathematics section.
  • English good enough for English-taught classes (at least IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 61).
  • Motivation, relevant experience and clear goals, set out in the motivation letter and tested at the online interview.

Tips for applying to ITS

  1. 1 Apply in Batch 1 if you have A-levels, IB or IGCSE results: it needs no separate test, and popular programmes such as Informatics and Mechanical Engineering had closed by Batch 4 in 2026.
  2. 2 You can choose two study programmes, ranked by priority, and cannot change them after finalising the form, so pick your order carefully.
  3. 3 If you plan a double degree, check the partner and scheme (2+2, 3+1, 2.5+1.5) for your programme: you pay the partner's tuition and living costs while abroad.
  4. 4 Batch 2 and 3 applicants must attend a mandatory technical meeting and trial run the day before the SMITS test, or they cannot sit it.
  5. 5 Your passport must be valid for at least 22 months from the date of application to avoid visa problems.

Student life

Student life centres on the Sukolilo campus in eastern Surabaya, which holds the faculties, main library, sports facilities and a student dormitory. ITS calls itself the 'Campus of Struggle', a nod to its independence-era roots, and much of campus culture runs through student organisations and competition teams in ship design, robotics and vehicles. International students get airport pick-up, an orientation week and a one-on-one buddy from the Global Engagement office.

  • Competition teams in ship design, autonomous boats, robotics and energy-efficient cars.
  • Student organisations for socio-politics, sports, arts and culture, plus religious and community groups.
  • Buddy programme, airport pick-up and orientation week for international students.
  • Campus sports centre, library, co-working space and medical centre.

Housing. ITS has on-campus dormitories, and its international office helps incoming international students with accommodation.

Location

Surabaya is Indonesia's second-largest city and a major port on the north coast of East Java. It is hot and humid all year, with a rainy season from roughly November to April. The city is known for its role in the 1945 independence struggle, commemorated every 10 November as Heroes' Day, and living costs are far lower than in Jakarta.
