About HYU
Hanyang University was founded in 1939 by Kim Lyun-joon, and its name comes from Hanyang, the Joseon-era name for Seoul. It is a private research university with two campuses run as separate admissions units: the main Seoul campus in Seongdong-gu and the ERICA campus in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province. Its motto, 'Love in Deed and Truth', gives its name to the university's volunteer programs.
Hanyang is best known for engineering. The Seoul campus College of Engineering covers everything from architecture and civil engineering to nuclear, automotive and energy engineering, and Hanyang's own admission guide cites world top-70 QS subject rankings in materials science and chemical engineering. There are also colleges of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, policy science, economics and finance, business, human ecology, music, performing arts and sport, and international studies. The university reports about 22,000 international students a year and 772 partner institutions in 82 countries.
International freshmen apply for spring (March) or fall (September) entry. Most departments are Korean Track and need TOPIK 4 before you start your degree. The university admits primarily on academic ability, though, so you can be accepted first, then take leave and study Korean until you meet the standard. English Track options are International Studies, Data Science and Business Administration (Global Management Track). Hanyang suits students who want a big Seoul university with strong engineering and business, and who are ready to study in Korean or take one of its few English tracks.

Why students choose HYU
Admission is decided mainly on academic results: Korean Track admits who haven't reached TOPIK 4 can take leave, study Korean, then start their degree.
HISP scholarships waive 50%, 70% or 100% of tuition for all eight semesters, awarded automatically on admission results (2.5 GPA to keep).
English Track programs in International Studies, Data Science and Global Management need no Korean at all.
You can make a dual application (a 1st and 2nd choice major) for a combined fee of KRW 169,000; if the 1st choice fails, you are considered for the 2nd automatically.

How to apply
Apply online at oia.hanyang.ac.kr and pay the fee (KRW 142,000, or KRW 169,000 for a 1st plus 2nd choice), then post the documents, since in-person submission is not accepted. You need the application form, a high school diploma and transcripts (apostille or consular authentication; CHSI for Chinese schools), passports or IDs for yourself and both parents, a family relationship certificate, and optional TOPIK/English scores and evidence of extracurricular activities. Some majors also require a personal statement and study plan or artwork on USB.
What admissions looks for
- Academic ability first: Hanyang says it prioritises applicants' academic abilities, regardless of whether they already meet the Korean language requirement.
- Academic achievements and major-related activities from high school, such as A-level, SAT, IB, gaokao results, clubs and competitions.
- For English Track programs, English proficiency and, for International Studies and Data Science, performance in an English interview.
- For arts majors, artwork that fits the specific major's brief.
Tips for applying to HYU
- 1 Send TOEFL/IELTS scores even on the Korean Track if you have them: TOEFL iBT 90 or IELTS 6.5 earns a 30% first-semester tuition cut, and TOPIK 5 or 6 earns 50% or 100%.
- 2 Business Administration and Media & Communication can only be a 1st choice. Plan your dual application around that.
- 3 Documents must arrive by post by the deadline, with apostilles, and they are not returned. Order extra originals for your visa application.
- 4 Check each major's notes: architecture, computer science, electronic engineering and others require a personal statement and study plan.
