Student Life & Environment

Student life reflects DI’s small scale and professional focus. The San Diego campus contains classrooms, drafting studios, computer laboratories, a lighting laboratory, a materials sample room, a library, student lounges, printers, and plotters. These resources are concentrated around design study rather than the broad recreation, athletics, and residential infrastructure typical of a larger university. Interior-design students are encouraged to engage with professional organizations, including the American Society of Interior Designers and International Interior Design Association. DI also connects academic and professional activity through visiting practitioners, field trips, community projects, externships, and career programming. Career Services supports résumé and interview preparation and shares employment and experiential-learning opportunities, but the institution explicitly does not guarantee employment. There is no institution-owned on-campus housing. Students arrange accommodation independently, although the Admissions Office offers housing and roommate guidance. That makes budgeting and commuting important parts of enrollment planning, especially for students moving to San Diego. DI’s physical campus is at 8555 Commerce Avenue in San Diego. The institution describes a roughly 30,000-square-foot campus distributed across five buildings, with parking and access to major freeways. It is north of central San Diego, near the University of California, San Diego area rather than in the downtown core. The location gives campus-based students access to a large metropolitan design market and to museums, architecture, public spaces, and cultural institutions throughout the region. DI points to downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, Mission Bay, La Jolla, and the Pacific coast as accessible regional destinations. These opportunities are off campus, so students should evaluate transportation and travel time for housing, internships, field visits, and everyday needs. Because DI does not operate residence halls, the surrounding rental market is a practical consideration. Admissions can provide housing and roommate guidance, but students remain responsible for arranging accommodation. Students enrolling in the fully online bachelor’s or master’s programs do not need to relocate unless their specific schedule or academic requirements indicate otherwise.

Costs & Career Outcomes

DI’s public tuition page still labels its principal rates as beginning in Fall 2024, so they should be treated as dated reference figures rather than confirmed 2026–2027 charges. That page lists BFA advance-payment tuition at $975 per unit and part-time tuition at $1,191 per unit, with an estimated $128,700 tuition charge across the 132-unit program. It lists Master of Interior Design tuition at $1,600 per unit, with estimated program tuition of $72,000 for the two-year track and $129,600 for the three-year track. Published additional charges include application, registration, library and technology, graduation, and course-dependent supply or field-trip costs. Rates for the newer online degrees are not clearly presented on that page, so every applicant should obtain a current program-specific cost sheet before committing. The institute participates in applicable federal and California aid programs and offers institutional scholarships and grants to qualifying students. Federal work-study, student loans, and eligible veterans’ benefits may also be available. Aid eligibility and award size are individual, and admission is required before aid can be awarded. Career preparation is integrated most explicitly into the interior-design BFA through an externship, practitioner-led teaching, field visits, community projects, and contact with professional associations.
