About BUCT
Beijing University of Chemical Technology was founded in 1958 as the Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology, created to train the high-level chemical engineers new China needed, and took its current name in 1994. It is a national key university under the Ministry of Education, a Project 211 member and a Double First-Class university, with Chemical Engineering and Technology as its Double First-Class discipline.
The university is strongest where its name suggests. Chemistry, materials science and engineering are in the top 1‰ of the Essential Science Indicators, and eight more subjects, from computer science to pharmacology, are in the top 1%. BUCT has 18 colleges and departments, more than 16,000 full-time undergraduates, over 10,000 postgraduates and about 420 international degree students, spread across campuses in Chaoyang, Haidian and Changping.
For international undergraduates, BUCT runs a compact programme: five majors can be studied in English (Chemical Engineering and Technology, Polymer Materials and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Chemistry, and Bioengineering), dozens more are taught in Chinese, and a Sino-French chemical and pharmaceutical engineering track is taught in French and English. Tuition is CNY 20,000 a year. It suits applicants who already know they want chemistry, materials or process engineering and want a specialist university in Beijing rather than a large comprehensive one.
宏德博学,化育天工
“To be ambitious, virtuous, profoundly learned and to serve people (the university's own English rendering)” — university motto
Why students choose BUCT
Chemistry, materials science and engineering rank in the top 1‰ of the Essential Science Indicators, the university's strongest research areas.
Five undergraduate majors, including Chemical Engineering and Technology and Computer Science and Technology, can be taken in English.
Tuition for international undergraduates is CNY 20,000 a year, and the Beijing Government Scholarship can cover it in full.
Double-degree (2+2) routes link BUCT with partner universities such as Kazan National Research Technological University, Tomsk State University and Prince of Songkla University.
