About AzTU
Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) is a state engineering university on H. Javid Avenue in Baku. It traces its roots to a technical school founded in the city in 1887 and to the Baku Polytechnic Institute of 1920. The modern Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute took shape in 1950, the date AzTU uses as its founding year, and the institute became Azerbaijan Technical University after independence.
Teaching is organised in six faculties: Information Technologies and Telecommunications; Industrial Economics and Management; Special Techniques and Technology; Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgy; Transport and Logistics; and Energy. Its research priorities are AI and cybersecurity, energy and transport, advanced materials and mechatronics, aerospace and telecommunications, and sustainable cities. Graduate study and MBA programmes run through a Higher Education Institute set up in 2021.
Most teaching is in Azerbaijani, and many programmes also run in Russian. International students can choose English-taught bachelor's degrees in computer engineering, computer science, information technologies, information security, radio and telecommunications engineering, economics, finance, management and business management. AzTU suits students who want an affordable, practical engineering or IT degree in a capital city and are comfortable with a largely local, Azerbaijani-speaking environment.
Why students choose AzTU
Nine bachelor's programmes are taught in English, including Computer Engineering, Information Security and Business Management.
Dual degree routes with Türkiye's Ankara University (Computer Engineering, two years in Baku and two in Ankara) and Gazi University, plus master's options with Brandenburg University of Technology and Gebze Technical University.
International bachelor's and master's students on a direct contract who reach a cumulative GPA of 91 or higher get a discount worth 50% of the annual tuition fee, applied to the next semester.
A one-year foundation programme in Azerbaijani, mathematics, physics and chemistry gives direct entry to a bachelor's degree without further entrance exams.
Admissions
2026-27 and 2027-28 admissions (latest published international details are from the 2024-25 and 2026 notices)
Selectivity
AzTU does not publish an acceptance rate. Azerbaijani school leavers are placed through the State Examination Centre's national entrance exams. International applicants are admitted directly by the university once their documents are approved.
Typical entry requirements
| Foreign secondary school diploma | Apostilled or legalised secondary school diploma and transcript, with a notarised Azerbaijani translation when you arrive |
|---|---|
| Foundation programme | For applicants without enough Azerbaijani for their chosen programme: a one-year course in Azerbaijani, mathematics, physics, chemistry and computing. The foundation certificate gives direct entry to the undergraduate programme without further entrance exams |
| Azerbaijani citizens | Placement through the State Examination Centre's entrance exams |
| English language | IELTS 5 · TOEFL iBT 40 AzTU's 2024-25 notice for foreign applicants lists IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL 40 as the minimum for undergraduate-level applicants (IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 50 for higher levels) if a language certificate is submitted. Applicants from countries where English is an official language are exempt. Most teaching is in Azerbaijani and Russian, so check the language of your specific programme. |
Deadlines
AzTU has not published an international application deadline for 2027 entry. Its most recent foundation-course notice had a 10 February 2025 deadline for the 2024-25 year. Confirm current dates with AzTU's International Admission Office before applying. Newly admitted Azerbaijani students registered through the mygov platform between 28 August and 8 September 2026.
How to apply
International applicants apply online through the portal.edu.az platform with a passport scan, a health certificate (including HIV and hepatitis B and C), an apostilled school diploma and transcript, and any language certificate. AzTU reviews the file and issues a conditional acceptance letter, sometimes after an interview, and then an official acceptance letter used for the student visa. Within three days of arrival, you hand in originals, notarised Azerbaijani translations, photos and visa documents to the International Admission Office.

- For Azerbaijani applicants, strong State Examination Centre scores: in 2026 an entrant with 646.7 points chose Information Security taught in English.
Tips for applying to AzTU
- 1 Check the language of instruction for your programme: IT, economics, finance and management degrees run in English, while mechanical engineering and logistics are Azerbaijani or Russian only.
- 2 Get your diploma apostilled before applying; you will need the original plus a notarised Azerbaijani translation within three days of arrival.
- 3 Ask about the dual degree options with Ankara and Gazi universities in Türkiye if you want a second diploma.
- 4 Aim for a cumulative GPA of 91 or above from your first semester: it earns a discount worth 50% of the annual tuition fee on the following semester.
