About WHUT
Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT) was formed in May 2000 by merging three institutions: the former Wuhan University of Technology (building materials), Wuhan Transportation University and Wuhan Automotive Polytechnic University. It is a state key university directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education, a member of the national 211 Project and the Double First-Class initiative, and it describes itself as the university that trains the largest number of talents for China's building and construction materials, transportation and automobile industries.
The university has three main campuses in Wuhan (Mafangshan, Yujiatou and South Lake) covering 2.67 million square metres, and more than 60,000 faculty and students. It runs 26 academic schools, from Materials Science and Engineering and Naval Architecture, Ocean and Energy Power Engineering to Management, Economics and Art and Design. It offers 102 undergraduate programmes, and 23 first-level disciplines are authorised to award doctorates.
For international undergraduates the practical picture is straightforward: programmes taught in Chinese, plus a short list taught in English (Business Administration, Civil Engineering, Economics, Computer Science and Technology, Mining Engineering, Logistics Management and Mechanical Engineering). It suits students who want an engineering-led degree in a large central-China city with tuition set at RMB 18,000 to 30,000 a year, and who are ready to sit the CSCA entrance assessment.

How to apply
Apply online through the WHUT International Students Service System (admission.whut.edu.cn). Upload the passport, high school diploma and transcripts, HSK or English certificate, CSCA score report, bank statement, non-criminal record certificate and physical examination report, and pay the RMB 500 application fee. Admitted students receive an Admission Notice and the Confirmation Form for Study in China and must enter China with a private passport and student visa.
What admissions looks for
- A complete, authentic set of documents; counterfeit materials lead to cancellation of admission.
- Good academic records and an educational background equivalent to a Chinese high school diploma.
- A CSCA score report in Mathematics (Physics and Chemistry are optional for science and engineering majors).
- Language proof: HSK 4 or above for Chinese-taught programmes, TOEFL or IELTS for English-taught ones.
Tips for applying to WHUT
- 1 Book the CSCA early: it is offered only in December, January, March, April and June, and the score report must be uploaded with your application.
- 2 Take the CSCA in the same language as your programme of instruction.
- 3 Chinese-taught fees are lower than English-taught fees in every category, so compare both if your Chinese is at HSK 4 or above.
- 4 Check the minimum class size: an English-taught major can be cancelled if fewer than 10 students register, and you would be moved to another available major.
- 5 Scholarship applicants use two systems: the CSC online system (university code 10497) and WHUT's own portal.
