About Waikato

Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato | University of Waikato opened in Hamilton in 1964 with just over 100 students and now has more than 16,000 students (16,493 in 2025), taught on its main Hamilton campus, a campus in central Tauranga, and through joint institutes in China and Vietnam. The Hamilton campus covers about 64 hectares of landscaped gardens around three lakes, with The Pā, a cultural and social hub, at its centre. The university has long-standing ties with the Kīngitanga and Waikato-Tainui.

Waikato is organised into schools and faculties including Waikato Management School, which holds Triple Crown accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA), Te Piringa Faculty of Law, the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (home of the Weka machine-learning software), the School of Engineering, and a Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies. In 2025 the Government approved the New Zealand Graduate School of Medicine at Waikato, a four-year programme due to take its first 120 students in 2028.

Entry to most bachelor's degrees is guaranteed with University Entrance, and the university stresses small classes, affordable living and work-integrated learning, with 6,300 work-integrated learning experiences in 2025. It suits students who want a practical, career-focused degree in a mid-sized city within commuting distance of Auckland.
