Visva-Bharati is located in Birbhum district in West Bengal, with campuses at Santiniketan and Sriniketan roughly three kilometres apart. The university places Santiniketan about 160 kilometres by road from Kolkata. Bolpur-Santiniketan is the nearest principal railway station, and the Santiniketan campus is approximately three kilometres from it. The setting is rural rather than metropolitan. Summers are hot and dry, the monsoon generally runs from July through September, and winters are short and cooler. Limited university bus service connects the two campuses, while banking and postal services are available in the Santiniketan-Bolpur area.
