About VIT Vellore
Vellore Institute of Technology was founded in 1984 by G. Viswanathan as Vellore Engineering College, a self-financing institution, and was granted deemed university status in 2001. The founder remains Chancellor. The VIT group now includes the Vellore and Chennai campuses of the deemed university plus separate state private universities, VIT-AP and VIT Bhopal.
Vellore is the main campus, with more than 30,000 students living in its hostels. Teaching is organised in schools such as the School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCOPE), the School of Electronics Engineering (SENSE), the School of Electrical Engineering (SELECT), the School of Mechanical Engineering (SMEC) and VIT Business School, alongside schools for architecture, design, agriculture, healthcare engineering and hotel management. The BTech list runs to dozens of specialisations, from core branches to computer science tracks in AI, cyber security, quantum computing and blockchain.
Admission to the BTech for Indian nationals is by rank in the VITEEE entrance exam, followed by online counselling in which students choose a campus, programme and fee category. Foreign nationals apply directly on school results. VIT's Fully Flexible Credit System lets students build their own timetables, and International Transfer Programmes let them finish the last two years at a partner university abroad. Freshers must live on campus unless a parent lives nearby.

How to apply
Indian applicants register on the VITEEE portal, pay the application fee (1,350 rupees, or the equivalent of USD 90 for test centres abroad), sit VITEEE and then join online counselling, choosing a campus, programme and fee category by rank. Foreign and NRI applicants apply through the separate NRI/Foreign online form, uploading a passport and Class 11 and 12 marks (NRI applicants pay USD 50).
What admissions looks for
- A strong VITEEE rank, since allotment of branch, campus and fee category depends on it.
- Qualifying marks in Class 12: 60% in PCM with at least 50% in Mathematics for most BTech programmes.
- For foreign applicants, a recognised Class 12 equivalent with 55% in the relevant sciences and English-medium schooling.
- Meeting the age limit (for 2026, born on or after 1 July 2004).

- 1 Your VITEEE rank decides both your branch and your fee category, which can change tuition from 1.73 lakh to 4.90 lakh rupees a year, so rank matters financially.
- 2 After allotment you cannot change branch, campus or fee category, so think carefully during counselling.
- 3 Only apply through vit.ac.in: VIT warns about fake websites and agents promising direct admission.
- 4 Budget for hostel costs too: first-years must live on campus, with room and mess from about 1.21 lakh rupees a year.

Tuition depends on the fee category allotted by VITEEE rank: Categories 0 to 4 are scholarship fee categories and Category 5 carries no scholarship. The STARS scheme (described on an undated VIT page) gives a 100% waiver of academic, hostel and basic medical costs to district-topping boys and girls from rural government schools in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Foreign-national fees are published in the NRI/Foreign prospectus.

Student life
VIT Vellore is a big residential campus: 32 hostel blocks (21 for men) house more than 30,000 residents, in AC and non-AC rooms of one to eight beds, with a choice of vegetarian, non-vegetarian or special mess. Hostels have gyms, a swimming pool, laundry, shops and 24-hour security, and first-years must live on campus unless a parent or guardian lives nearby. The biggest event is Riviera, the annual international sports and cultural festival held each February.

Location
Vellore is a mid-sized city in northern Tamil Nadu. The VIT campus sits beside a main railway line on the Chennai route, and Chennai, the nearest big city and airport, is a few hours away by train or road. Living costs are lower than in India's big metros.
