Student Life & Environment

Student life is distributed between the Rosenberg campus and several student-run or university-linked spaces around St.Gallen. The campus provides library and group-study facilities, IT resources, catering and SQUARE, an experimental learning building with additional study space. The sports complex includes sports halls, fitness rooms, an artificial-grass field and a beach-volleyball court, while Unisport also uses third-party facilities. The Student Union operates or supports co-working, event, bar and relaxation spaces, giving students settings for both organized activities and informal contact. University reporting for the 2025 intake described more than 140 student clubs, covering subjects that include business, sustainability and sport. Students can also become involved in the Student Union and earn campus credits for certain services performed for the university community. Housing requires advance planning. HSG’s Housing Service provides furnished rooms only to incoming guest or exchange students, not to the general degree-seeking population. Regular students ordinarily search the private market for flats or shared rooms, and landlords may request documentation and a security deposit of as much as three months’ rent. International students staying longer than three months must also address residence registration and health-insurance obligations. This is therefore not a conventional residential-campus model with guaranteed university accommodation.

The university is in St.Gallen, the principal urban center of eastern Switzerland and part of the country’s German-speaking region. Most classes take place on the Rosenberg campus, while additional university and Student Union facilities are located elsewhere in the city. This dispersed arrangement gives students access to both campus infrastructure and city-based study, event and social spaces. HSG characterizes St.Gallen as offering short distances, established infrastructure, historical surroundings and proximity to nature. Its published 2026 cost guidance also describes local living costs as lower than in larger Swiss cities such as Zurich, although Switzerland remains an expensive destination by international standards. Applicants should budget from actual HSG figures rather than rely on that comparison alone. International students must account for Swiss entry and residence rules. Non-EU/EFTA students generally need to arrange a residence permit before entering, while EU/EFTA nationals may apply after arrival. New arrivals must register with the relevant municipality within 14 days. Students residing in Switzerland for more than three months require qualifying health-insurance coverage, subject to limited exemption routes for equivalent coverage.

For autumn semester 2026, tuition for Swiss nationals is CHF 1,310.50 per semester at bachelor’s level, CHF 1,524.50 at master’s level and CHF 668.50 at doctoral level. For foreign nationals, the corresponding charges are CHF 3,343.50, CHF 3,557.50 and CHF 1,150.50. The Joint Medical Master has a separate fee schedule. The non-refundable application and processing fee is CHF 268 from autumn 2026. HSG recommends planning for total annual costs of CHF 25,000 to CHF 30,000. Its published bachelor’s budget, based on the 2024 Swiss federal student survey, estimates CHF 2,175 per month, including CHF 795 for accommodation and utilities, CHF 440 for food and allowances for transport, health, communications and personal expenses. These figures are planning estimates rather than guaranteed costs, and private rent, insurance status and lifestyle will change the total. The university reports more than 1,200 vacancies annually on that platform and holds a spring recruiting conference involving more than 100 companies. Work rules differ by immigration status: students from EU/EFTA countries with a B permit may work up to 15 hours weekly without a separate work permit, while non-EU/EFTA students can apply for authorization for the same workload.
