About UTAS
The University of Tasmania was founded in 1890, making it Australia's fourth-oldest university, and it is the only university in Australia's only island state. Its main campuses are in Hobart in the south, Launceston in the north and Burnie on the north-west Cradle Coast, with a specialist nursing and paramedicine campus in Sydney. It had 32,605 students in 2025, and 45% of its commencing domestic students were the first in their family at university.
Teaching is organised into faculties of Arts and Society, Health, Sciences and Engineering, the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics, and University College. Some of its best-known work sits in specialist institutes: the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) on the Hobart waterfront, the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, the Menzies Institute for Medical Research and the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture. IMAS describes its aim as being an internationally recognised centre of excellence for marine and Antarctic research and education.
Entry is accessible for most courses (for example, a minimum IB score of 24, or a Senior Middle 3 average of 70% for students from China), while Medicine is competitive and needs an aptitude test. The Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science is taught through IMAS in Hobart, with majors from Marine Biology to Oceans, Ice and Climate.
Graduates who stay in Tasmania can work for up to four years after study on a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa, an extra year compared with major cities.

UTAS does not publish an offer rate. Most courses admit applicants who meet the general entry requirements; quota courses rank by ATAR. In 2026 the lowest ATAR to receive an offer was 50.25 for Arts, 65.8 for Psychological Science and 60.15 to 67.30 for Nursing depending on campus. Domestic Medicine needs a minimum adjusted ATAR of 95 plus UCAT ANZ.

How to apply
International students apply directly through the UTAS online application portal (no application fee) or through an authorised agent, which is required in some countries; outcomes are usually advised within one to two weeks of a complete application. Domestic students also apply directly to UTAS (up to five preferences, free of charge), and Australian Year 12 students can get early offers through the Schools Recommendation Program.
What admissions looks for
- A recognised secondary qualification meeting the minimum grade for your country, plus any course prerequisites.
- English proficiency at the course's level, from IELTS 6.0 for most courses to 7.0 or more for health and education degrees.
- For quota courses such as Nursing and Psychology, a competitive ATAR or equivalent, since offers are made by rank until places are filled.
- For Medicine, a high ATAR or equivalent plus a clinical aptitude test score.
Tips for applying to UTAS
- 1 Apply early for Semester 1: overseas students are advised to apply at least five months ahead, and COE deadlines start as early as 12 December 2026 for some regions.
- 2 You do not need a separate scholarship application: UTAS automatically assesses international applicants for the Tasmanian Aurora Excellence Scholarship (50% of tuition), the International Merit Scholarship (30%) and the Tasmanian Access Scholarship (20%).
- 3 If you want Medicine as an international student, submit your aptitude test result by the round closing date: rounds close on 30 September and 30 November 2026.
- 4 Consider Launceston or Burnie as well as Hobart: many courses run on several campuses, and university rooms in Launceston and on the Cradle Coast cost about A$205-284 a week in 2027.

UTAS campuses sit in small cities where students can live within walking distance of classes, shops and farmers' markets. Student accommodation ranges from self-contained apartments to communal residential colleges, and prices include electricity, water and Wi-Fi: about A$316-588 a week in Hobart and A$205-284 in Launceston and on the Cradle Coast (2027 prices).
