About UKM

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, the National University of Malaysia, was established on 18 May 1970 after decades of campaigning for a university that would use Malay as a language of knowledge. It opened in Kuala Lumpur with 192 undergraduates and two postgraduates in three faculties (Science, Arts and Islamic Studies), and moved to its main campus in Bangi, Selangor, in 1977, a site of 1,096 hectares.

UKM was named a Malaysian research university in 2006, gained self-accreditation in 2010 and autonomous status in 2012. Its faculties include Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Engineering and Built Environment, Science and Technology, Information Science and Technology, Economics and Management, Law, Islamic Studies, Education and Social Sciences and Humanities, and its teaching hospital, the UKM Medical Centre, is in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. UKM also runs a branch campus in Lusail, Qatar.

Most undergraduate teaching is in Malay, which is central to UKM's identity. International undergraduates usually join through UKM International (UKMi), a full-time study mode run by the university's UKMShape centre, with programmes such as Business Administration, Information Technology and Biomedical Science. UKM suits students who want a large, research-active national university with a strong science and health profile and a green suburban campus close to Kuala Lumpur.

Applications opened 20 April 2026. The headline notice for international applicants gives 20 July 2026; the table beneath it lists 10 August 2026, which is the stated deadline for Malaysian applicants, so the two tables appear swapped. Programmes may close earlier when full.

These are the 2026/2027 session dates. UKM had not published 2027 intake dates on the pages checked; expect a similar window opening in April and closing in July for international applicants.

How to apply

International undergraduates apply online through the JoinUKM portal (join.ukm.my) during the intake window, uploading certified academic documents, a photo and proof of the RM100 processing fee. Successful applicants then obtain a student pass through Education Malaysia Global Services.

  3. 3 Budget for the 6% Sales and Service Tax on international tuition fees that UKMShape announced in an August 2026 notice.
