Student Life & Environment

Campus life combines student organizations, cultural programming, sport, libraries and support services. The university reports around 100 associations covering cultural, humanitarian, athletic and advocacy interests. Students can participate in concerts, festivals, forums, information events and other projects, while the student-life office helps associations and elected student representatives develop university-wide initiatives. Arts and culture are particularly visible in the Rennes 2 environment, with dedicated performance and exhibition spaces and a multidisciplinary cultural season. Physical activity is also prominent: the inter-university sports service offers close to 40 disciplines. Libraries, computing facilities and an educational technology space support study on the main Villejean campus. Student health and social support are available, including assistance for students with permanent or temporary disabilities. CROUS-affiliated restaurants and cafeterias operate on or near the campuses, although services vary by location. Housing is not guaranteed by the university. Rennes 2 directs students toward CROUS and other housing resources, and its housing guidance warns that accommodation in Rennes can be difficult to secure. Early planning is therefore important, especially for students arriving from abroad or seeking housing near Villejean.

Location & Surroundings

The university’s two Rennes campuses are Villejean and La Harpe. Villejean is the largest site and accommodates most of the university’s students and academic infrastructure. It lies in the Villejean district, while La Harpe is nearby in the Kennedy area and is particularly associated with sport studies. Both are served by the Rennes public-transport network, making it possible to live elsewhere in the metropolitan area rather than immediately beside campus. The third campus, Mazier, is in Saint-Brieuc and is not a suburb of Rennes. It hosts selected programs, including some study in administration, history, applied languages and sport. Applicants assigned to Mazier should base housing and travel plans on Saint-Brieuc rather than Rennes. Rennes is a regional capital with a large student population and substantial cultural activity. That creates access to services and events but also pressure on rental housing. Students should verify the exact teaching site before signing a lease and allow time to investigate CROUS residences, private rentals, shared housing and guarantor arrangements.

Costs & Career Outcomes

For 2026–2027, the nationally published standard registration charges at French public institutions are €178 for a Licence, €255 for a Master and €398 for a Doctorat. Eligible students may pay reduced rates or receive exemptions. These national-degree amounts do not necessarily cover university diplomas, continuing education, language-center courses or other programs with separate pricing. Rennes 2 announced that no student would pay differentiated international registration fees there in 2026–2027. Applicants should nevertheless verify how that policy applies to their individual status and program. Students in initial higher education must also obtain a CVEC certificate; the 2026–2027 contribution is €105 unless an exemption applies. Living expenses, housing, transport, meals, insurance and visa-related costs are separate. No single university housing or living-cost figure was verified, and the university advises that accommodation in Rennes can be difficult to find. Career preparation depends strongly on the chosen discipline. Rennes 2 permits required and optional placements under program rules and reports more than 6,000 student placements per year. Its career and guidance service provides workshops on placement searches, employment, mobility and professional planning. Applicants should examine each program’s placement structure, work-study availability and graduate-outcome evidence. Broad university-wide salary or employment claims would not reliably describe outcomes across fields as different as psychology, languages, arts, geography and sport.
