Sign up to see your chancesUniversité de Bretagne Occidentale, usually called UBO, is a public multidisciplinary university headquartered in Brest, Brittany. Founded in 1971, it became a public experimental institution in March 2025 while retaining its established name. Its teaching and research extend across Brest, Quimper, Morlaix and Plouzané, with fields including arts and languages, law and economics, health, science and technology, sport, education, social sciences, marine studies and engineering. UBO reported 22,583 students and 465 doctoral candidates as of January 2026. Students should examine the location of each program carefully because facilities and courses are distributed among several sites rather than concentrated on one campus. Most degree study is organized within the French Licence–Master–Doctorat framework, with French as the principal language of instruction.

Student Life & Environment
Student life is organized across a network of sites rather than a single enclosed campus. UBO reported 70 officially recognized student associations in January 2026, giving students routes into academic, cultural, civic and recreational activities. The university’s student-life service also coordinates campus initiatives and provides information about food, sport, culture, health, disability support and international mobility. The character of daily life depends substantially on the program location. Brest contains the largest concentration of faculties and services, but its teaching is itself divided among Bouguen, Segalen, health-related sites and other buildings. Quimper and Morlaix offer smaller university settings, while the Plouzané technology cluster serves specialized marine and engineering communities. Students considering clubs, services or housing should confirm what is available near their particular site rather than assuming that every facility is within walking distance. UBO does not present university accommodation as automatically included with admission. Prospective students should plan housing independently and investigate public CROUS residences and private alternatives early. International and first-year students may find association activity and university support services especially useful for navigating a dispersed institution, but availability, eligibility and application procedures should be checked directly for the relevant academic year.
Location & Surroundings
UBO is headquartered in Brest in Finistère, at the western end of Brittany. Brest contains most of the university’s faculties, but these occupy several urban sites rather than one compact campus. The Bouguen area accommodates science, law, sport and other services; Segalen is associated with humanities; and health disciplines use their own cluster. Applicants should confirm the exact address attached to their program before choosing accommodation or estimating a commute. Beyond Brest, UBO operates in Quimper and Morlaix. Quimper hosts the Pierre-Jakez Hélias university centre, an IUT and engineering activity, while Morlaix accommodates two departments of the Brest–Morlaix IUT. At the Brest-Iroise technology cluster in Plouzané, about 15 minutes from central Brest according to the university, the European Institute for Marine Studies and engineering provision connect students with a specialized coastal research environment. This multi-site arrangement offers access to different Breton cities and academic clusters, but it also makes transport planning important. A student based in Brest should not assume that a Quimper, Morlaix or Plouzané class is locally interchangeable.
Costs & Career Outcomes
For 2026–2027, UBO lists nationally set annual registration charges of €178 for Licence study, €255 for Master study, €398 for third-cycle registration and €630 for engineering study. These figures are registration rights, not a complete cost of attendance. Students must also budget for housing, food, transport, insurance, study materials and any program-specific expenses. The student-and-campus contribution, or CVEC, was €105 for 2026–2027 where applicable; exemptions can depend on status. Some non-EU students are subject to differentiated fees under rules changed in May 2026. UBO lists €2,902 for Licence, BUT and professional Licence study and €3,950 for Master study for affected students. It also explains that exemptions depend on individual circumstances and are limited under the applicable rules. International applicants should determine their category before relying on the standard national rates. Doctoral candidates and several other specified groups are outside the differentiated-fee regime. Career preparation is supported by Cap’Avenir, which assists with applications for internships, jobs, selective study and first employment. The service operates a Career Center carrying internship, work-study and employment opportunities and conducts graduate-outcome surveys. These resources are useful, but UBO does not publish a single institution-wide salary or placement guarantee. Prospective students should examine outcomes for their particular program and consider whether it incorporates internships, work-study or professional projects.
