About Unicamp
Unicamp, the State University of Campinas, was officially founded on 5 October 1966, when the foundation stone of its campus was laid on land donated in Barão Geraldo, Campinas; its School of Medicine had started earlier. Under founding rector Zeferino Vaz it was planned from scratch as a research university, and it is funded almost entirely by the São Paulo state government, so like other Brazilian public universities it charges no tuition fees.
In 2025 Unicamp had 37,874 students: 20,804 in 65 undergraduate courses and 17,070 in master's, doctoral and specialisation programmes, taught by 1,770 faculty, 99% of whom hold doctorates. Teaching is organised into more than 20 institutes and faculties, including the Gleb Wataghin Institute of Physics, the Institute of Computing, the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (FEEC), the Institute of Economics and the School of Medical Sciences, with satellite campuses in Limeira and Piracicaba.
Getting in is very competitive. Most students enter through the two-phase Vestibular Unicamp run by Comvest; for 2027 entry, 58,431 people registered for 2,523 places in 70 courses. There are also routes through ENEM scores (Enem-Unicamp, for public-school and quota candidates), the Provão Paulista, olympiad medals and an indigenous vestibular. It suits students who want serious science, engineering or medicine at a top public university without paying tuition.
