Student Life & Environment

Student life is centred on the Chirunga campus and the surrounding Zomba community. UNIMA identifies sports, recreation, clubs, societies, and faith groups as routes into campus participation. New-student guidance also points students toward orientation, registration, lecture rooms, laboratories, the library, and sports facilities when they arrive. Accommodation requires early planning. UNIMA states that students are admitted on a non-residential basis and must separately apply for the limited university-managed rooms. Its guidance says room allocation uses a random mechanism, with preference for students with disabilities. Students who do not receive a room may seek privately operated flats or houses near campus. The university also identifies a main cafeteria and privately operated food outlets around the campus. Support services described by UNIMA include the Director of Student Affairs, personal tutors, confidential counselling, and a Special Needs Section in the main library. The university also directs students toward possible external loans, grants, and scholarships, including support associated with Malawi’s Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board. Location & Surroundings

UNIMA is located on Chirunga Road in Zomba, Malawi’s former capital. The university places the campus at Chirunga, about two kilometres from Zomba’s main trading centre. Students can therefore reach shops and city services without living in a remote, self-contained campus environment. Official guidance identifies walking, driving, taxis, and hired bicycles, locally known as kabaza, as ways to travel between town and the university. The city-campus relationship matters most for accommodation and daily budgeting. Because students are normally admitted without guaranteed residence, many need to compare university-managed rooms with privately rented flats or houses in surrounding areas. The university specifically points to nearby off-campus options and advises students to arrange accommodation after selection. Applicants arriving from outside Malawi should plan transport to Zomba, immigration requirements, medical cover, and local living arrangements independently. UNIMA’s published address is P.O. Costs & Career Outcomes

UNIMA does not publish one institution-wide price that can safely represent every student. Fees vary by programme, study route, nationality, and sometimes attendance mode. In the 2026/27 mature-entry notice, annual tuition for several listed bachelor’s routes was MWK 850,000 for Malawians, USD 1,200 for SADC students, and USD 2,000 for non-SADC students. These amounts were attached to specified mature-entry programmes and should not be generalized to all undergraduate study. Postgraduate costs are likewise programme-specific. The September 2026 intake notice explained that advertised tuition covered registration, examinations, supervision, and institutional overheads. Students remained responsible for research expenses, accommodation, meals, medical cover, books, stationery, and other learning materials. The same notice required applicants to show how they would finance their studies and stated that postgraduate accommodation was not provided for that intake. Applicants should therefore build a budget from the exact programme notice and add living and research costs rather than relying only on tuition. Career preparation varies by subject. UNIMA’s student guidance says faculties and departments occasionally arrange attachments with selected organizations during vacations, and students may assist staff research projects.
