About TUAT

TUAT traces its history to 1874, when the Ministry of Home Affairs set up an agricultural training institute and a silkworm disease experiment section in Naito-Shinjuku. Its agricultural and sericulture predecessors later became the Tokyo Imperial College of Agriculture and Forestry, which moved to Fuchu in 1935, and the Tokyo Textile College in Koganei; the two were combined in 1949 as the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, with the Faculty of Textile renamed the Faculty of Engineering in 1962.

The university has just two undergraduate faculties. The Faculty of Agriculture in Fuchu covers biological production, applied biological science, environmental and natural resource sciences, ecoregion science and a cooperative veterinary medicine programme; the Faculty of Engineering in Koganei covers biotechnology and life science, biomedical engineering, applied chemistry, applied physics and chemical engineering, mechanical systems engineering, and electrical engineering and computer science. It is research-heavy for its size: of its 383 international students in May 2026, 294 were graduate students.

It suits students who want a focused science and engineering education at a national university with Tokyo access but a greener, quieter suburban setting, and who can study in Japanese.

Why students choose TUAT

Admissions

April 2027 entry (Privately Financed International Student Examination, academic year 2027)

Selectivity

Each department admits only 'a few' (若干名) privately financed international students, and the university notes that there may be no successful applicants. Places come out of the general first-stage quota. TUAT does not publish an admission rate for this route.

Testing EJU required (June or November 2026 sitting): Japanese, Mathematics Course 2 and two science subjects. Agriculture: EJU taken in Japanese; Biological Production, Applied Biological Science and Veterinary Medicine require chemistry and biology, the other two departments any two of physics, chemistry and biology. Engineering: EJU in Japanese or English, with physics required for most departments. Plus TOEIC L&R 500 or TOEFL iBT 52 (Test Date score, within two years). Selection: EJU 800 points plus interview (including oral questions) 200 points; the Common Test is not required.

How to apply

Pay the JPY 17,000 application fee at a Japan Post office and mail the application (by registered post, in TUAT's own envelope) with the application form, photo card, graduation certificate and transcripts (originals), EJU 2026 score documents, TOEIC or TOEFL score report, CV in Japanese and copies of your residence card or passport. Shortlisted by EJU, applicants then sit an interview on campus.

What admissions looks for

  • Strong EJU scores in Japanese, Mathematics Course 2 and the two sciences your department requires.
  • At least basic English: TOEIC 500 or TOEFL iBT 52.
  • A good interview, which includes oral questions on your subject.
  • A completed 12-year school education or recognised qualification such as the IB or A-levels.

Tips for applying to TUAT

  1. 1 Take the June 2026 or November 2026 EJU with the right science pair: Agriculture's Biological Production, Applied Biological Science and Veterinary Medicine all need chemistry and biology.
  2. 2 Agriculture applicants must take the EJU in Japanese; Engineering accepts the English-language version.
  3. 3 Post your application early from inside Japan: it must arrive by January 25, 2027, and applications cannot be handed in at the office.
  4. 4 If you went to an international school abroad, contact TUAT by November 11, 2026 to confirm your eligibility.
