Télécom SudParis began in 1979 as the engineering school of the Institut National des Télécommunications. It received state authorization to award an engineering diploma that same year and adopted its present name in 2009. It is now a public graduate engineering school belonging to Institut Mines-Télécom. It is also part of Institut Polytechnique de Paris, an alliance through which the participating schools coordinate research and selected master’s and doctoral provision while retaining their institutional identities.
