About Stevens
Stevens Institute of Technology was chartered in 1870 with a bequest from engineer and inventor Edwin A. Stevens, whose widow Martha Bayard Stevens, a founding trustee, steered the money toward an engineering college. It sits on Castle Point, a bluff above the Hudson River in Hoboken, New Jersey, directly across from Manhattan. In fall 2025 it enrolled 8,367 students, split almost evenly between 4,206 undergraduates and 4,161 graduate students.
Teaching is organised into four schools and one college: the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science, the School of Business, the School of Computing, the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, and the College of Professional Education. Computer science, mechanical engineering, and business and technology are the most popular undergraduate degrees, and the business school offers unusual majors such as quantitative finance and business and artificial intelligence. Stevens hosts two national centres of excellence, including the Department of Defense-sponsored Systems Engineering Research Center.
Admission is selective but not extreme: Stevens admitted about half of its 10,499 first-year applicants for fall 2025, and enrolled first-years who submitted scores had a middle-50% SAT of 1370-1470. Stevens is a compact, mostly residential campus on Castle Point, where the lawns and the Babbio Center look straight across the Hudson at Manhattan. Hoboken is a dense, walkable small city on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River, directly across from Manhattan. Stevens sits at its northern end on Castle Point.
