Student experience varies substantially by program because students are based at different research institutes. Daily life may therefore resemble participation in a specialist laboratory more than attendance at a conventional residential university. Location & Surroundings

SOKENDAI's headquarters are in Shonan Village, Hayama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The Hayama site houses central administration and the Integrative Evolutionary Science program, but it is not the study location for every student. Other programs operate at inter-university research institutes across Japan, so applicants must use the location stated for their intended program when estimating housing, commuting, and living costs. Hayama Campus is reached primarily by bus. The university's published directions give an approximate journey of 29 minutes from JR Zushi Station, 25 minutes from Keikyu Zushi-Hayama Station, or 30 minutes from Keikyu Shioiri Station to the Shonan Kokusaimura Center Mae stop. A bus from Yokohama City Air Terminal takes approximately 45 minutes. These estimates are scheduled travel times and should not be treated as guarantees. The headquarters setting is therefore quieter and less centrally connected than an urban rail-adjacent campus. Prospective Hayama-based students should examine bus schedules and housing access carefully. Students assigned to another institute should instead research that institute's neighborhood and transport network, since the Hayama profile may have little bearing on their daily routine.

Costs & Career Outcomes

For AY2026, SOKENDAI lists an entrance fee of JPY 282,000 and annual tuition of JPY 535,800. Tuition is normally divided into two payments of JPY 267,900 for the April–September and October–March semesters. These are institutional charges and do not include housing, food, transport, insurance, research travel, or relocation. Future entrants should verify the fee stated in their own admission guideline because the university warns that revised rates may apply from the effective date. Students experiencing financial difficulty may apply for tuition or admission-fee exemption under university rules, but approval is not automatic. Research support and other funding opportunities also have separate eligibility and selection processes. Because study sites are distributed across Japan and SOKENDAI does not own international-student dormitories, living costs cannot be estimated sensibly from the Hayama location alone.
