ShanghaiTech was formally established in 2013 and is jointly organized and supported by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with day-to-day administration by the Shanghai government. This structure makes it an independent public university rather than a department or laboratory of the academy. It remains operational and awarded bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees at its July 2026 commencement. The institution is deliberately concentrated around research and innovation. This setting is particularly relevant to students seeking laboratory-intensive education or future research training. ShanghaiTech joined China’s second-round Double First-Class initiative in 2022. Prospective students should nevertheless assess the institution by program fit, language environment and admissions route rather than treating that national designation as a guarantee of experience in every discipline.

For 2026 undergraduate entry, ShanghaiTech recruited in 19 Chinese provincial-level jurisdictions. Eighteen used a comprehensive-evaluation route centered on the university’s Campus Open Day, while Anhui used ordinary undergraduate admission based on the national examination. Applicants should not interpret either statement as meaning every course or administrative service is English-only. At graduate level, ShanghaiTech offers academic and professional master’s study and doctoral education. The 2026 master’s process includes national entrance examinations and program-level reassessment, while doctoral routes include ordinary application-assessment admission, direct doctoral entry and progression from a master’s program. ShanghaiTech’s main campus combines academic, residential and recreation facilities in Zhangjiang. The university’s campus-life information identifies an athletic center, student center, library, dining facilities and dormitories, as well as more than 60 clubs and societies. ShanghaiTech says undergraduate mentor groups consist of five to seven students paired with a full-time professor and two Chinese Academy of Sciences adjunct professors. Room configurations and availability should be reconfirmed for the intended entry year; the 2026 master’s admissions guide promises varied accommodation but says assignments depend on annual conditions. ShanghaiTech’s principal campus is at 393 Middle Huaxia Road in Pudong, within Zhangjiang Science City. A second site, the Yueyang Campus, is at 319 Yueyang Road in Xuhui District. The surroundings are oriented toward research and high-technology development rather than Shanghai’s older central-campus atmosphere. The university states that the main campus is about 26 kilometres from Pudong International Airport. Zhongke Road station on Metro Line 13 is at the campus edge, while Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park station on Line 2 requires an additional short road connection. Travel to central districts can therefore be practical by metro, but students should account for Shanghai’s scale when considering internships, housing away from campus or activities across the city.

Costs & Career Outcomes

For students admitted to undergraduate programs in 2026, the university published tuition of CNY 7,000 per academic year and accommodation of CNY 1,200 per academic year. Its admissions FAQ also identifies a support system that includes national and Shanghai scholarships, need-based grants, government-supported student loans, work-study and other hardship assistance. These are 2026 published amounts and should be reconfirmed for later cohorts; food, transport, insurance, books and personal costs are not included. The 2026 master’s guide says all full-time master’s students within the national enrollment plan pay tuition and directs applicants to the university’s current graduate fee and funding rules. It does not state a single universal amount on the admissions page, and graduate accommodation depends on annual arrangements. A February 2026 disclosure proposed tuition of CNY 45,000 per year for newly enrolled self-funded international doctoral students, subject to filing with the Shanghai education authority.
