About Queen's

Queen's was established by royal charter from Queen Victoria in October 1841, and first classes were held in March 1842 with 15 students and two professors. Today it has 28,561 full-time students (fall 2025) on its campus in Kingston, Ontario, and it also runs Bader College at Herstmonceux Castle in England, donated by alumnus Alfred Bader. Its faculties and schools include Arts and Science, Smith School of Business, Smith Engineering, Health Sciences (including Nursing), Education and Law.

Queen's is one of Canada's most sought-after undergraduate destinations: it received more than 59,500 applications to direct-entry programs for fall 2025, and the 5,477 first-years who enrolled arrived with an average of 90.5%. Commerce at Smith School of Business needs a 90+ average to be considered, and Health Sciences and Nursing sit in the low 90s, while Arts and Science start in the low 80s.

The university is known for its strong residential first year and school spirit, and its retention figures back that up: 94.3% of students who entered in 2023 returned for second year, above the U15 research-university average of 91.6%. It suits students who want a traditional, close-knit campus experience in a small city, with serious academics in business, engineering, health and the liberal arts.

After applying you get a Queen's student number and NetID, and your SOLUS To-Do list shows supplementary applications, auditions and documents.

What admissions looks for

  • Grades in prerequisite courses, with preference given to applicants with the strongest overall qualifications.
  • For Commerce, Nursing and Health Sciences, the Supplementary Application, which Queen's uses alongside grades once applicants clear a minimum average.
  • Auditions or portfolios where required, for example in Music and Music Theatre.
  • For major awards: superior academic ability, creative and original thinking, school and community involvement, leadership and financial need.

Tips for applying to Queen's

  1. 1 Apply on OUAC by mid-November 2026 (Queen's gives both November 15 and November 20 as the recommended date) if you want a Major Admission Award; the award application itself closes December 8, 2026.
  2. 2 Practise on Kira Talent before recording your Commerce, Health Sciences or Nursing video response, and read the published Supplementary Application rubrics.
  3. 3 Check your SOLUS To-Do list often: each applicant's list of required items and due dates is different.
  4. 4 Treat the published competitive averages as floors, not targets: Queen's notes they vary each year and can be higher.

Location

Kingston is a historic city at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, roughly midway between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Queen's campus sits near downtown and the waterfront, and its limestone buildings, like Grant Hall, match the city's heritage character. It is a student-heavy small city, so life revolves around campus, the lake and the downtown core.
