About PUCE

The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE) was founded in Quito in 1946 by the Society of Jesus with the archbishop of Quito. It opened with a single Faculty of Jurisprudence and 54 students, according to Spanish Wikipedia, and its main campus remains in Quito, with other campuses in Ambato, Esmeraldas, Ibarra, Santo Domingo, Manabí and the Amazon region. The university's own identity pages describe Ignatian pedagogy and the motto Seréis mis testigos (You will be my witnesses).

On its Quito site PUCE lists about 50 undergraduate programmes, from Medicine, Dentistry, Law and Architecture to Data Science, Bioengineering, Applied Languages for Global Studies and Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Teaching is organised in faculties such as Health and Wellbeing, Law and Society, Economics and Business Management, Habitat, Infrastructure and Creativity, Exact, Natural and Environmental Sciences, and Learning, Languages and Communication, plus an International Innovation Faculty run with the French group Icam. THE's 2026 profile counts 29,406 students, 2% of them international.

PUCE admits students through its own entrance exam or an admission course rather than through a national test, and inscription carries no fee. It suits applicants who read Spanish well, want a private Catholic university with a broad programme range and are comfortable with fees set in US dollars on a published table.

Tips for applying to PUCE

  1. 1 Use the free exam simulator before sitting the aptitude exam, since you can choose the exam date and time.
  2. 2 If you attend an Ignatian, Quito archdiocesan or IB school, check the direct-entry agreements before paying for a preparation course.
  3. 3 Medicine has fixed exam dates and its own places, so plan earlier for it than for other programmes.
  4. 4 Budget for the matricula and arancel together: the published fee table says the arancel is added to the matricula, the student contribution and medical insurance.

Costs & financial aid

2026 · figures in USD

Undergraduate, full-time load (9+ credits), Annex 2 of the PUCE 2026 fee table (programmes entered from 2023-02, which covers new entrants): matricula US$395 + arancel US$3,950 = US$4,345 per academic period; Medicine and Dentistry US$395 + US$5,500 = US$5,895 per period. The table does not literally say 'per semester' (its 'ordinary/extraordinary period' columns refer to on-time versus late enrolment). Because the arancel is set by the credits taken in one term (9 or more, or 1 to 8 at US$1,975), the medical insurance is listed as semestral and validation of prior work is priced as 'two semesters of arancel', the figures are treated as per semester; PUCE runs two periods a year (2026: 16 March and 1 September), so annual = 2 x US$4,345 = US$8,690 (US$11,790 for Medicine and Dentistry). Student contribution and medical insurance are extra. Students in older programmes (Annex 1) pay tiered aranceles by category Tuition $8,690 – $11,790
