About UNIVPM

Marche Polytechnic University (Università Politecnica delle Marche, UNIVPM) grew out of the Free University of Ancona, set up in 1969 with a Faculty of Engineering and the first years of Medicine, and recognised as a state university on 18 January 1971. The founding faculties were later joined by Economics and Commerce, and Agriculture and Sciences followed in 1988-89. Today it is organised into five faculties, Agriculture, Economics 'Giorgio Fuà', Engineering, Medicine and Surgery, and Sciences, with courses in six cities of the Marche region and a hilltop science and technology campus at Monte Dago in Ancona that looks over the Adriatic.

Most degrees are taught in Italian, but UNIVPM offers a growing list of English programmes. At undergraduate level, Digital Economics and Business and Environmental Sciences and Civil Protection are taught entirely in English, and the six-year Medicine and Surgery course 'Medicine and Technology' combines an MD with biomedical engineering, with 80 places, 50 of them reserved for non-EU students. Several health-profession bachelor's and many master's degrees are wholly or partly in English.

Fees are low by international standards. Italian and EU students pay according to family income (ISEE), with a total of 156 euros a year for ISEE up to 28,000 euros, and students from non-OECD countries pay a flat 156 euros in their first year. The university offers free Italian courses to international students, and the regional agency ERDIS provides income- and merit-based scholarships, housing and canteens.

How to apply

Submit a pre-evaluation application on UNIVPM's international portal (maximum two programmes, 10 euros each) during one of the intake calls. If you are positively assessed and need a visa, complete the pre-enrolment on Universitaly to apply for a study visa. For restricted programmes such as Medicine, apply on both the UNIVPM portal and Universitaly at the same time and follow the admission competition call. Enrolment opens from mid-July.

What admissions looks for

  • A secondary qualification that meets Italian entry requirements for your country, with any minimum score UNIVPM lists.
  • Proof of B2 English for English-taught degrees, or B2 Italian for Italian-taught degrees if you are a non-EU applicant living abroad.
  • For Medicine and Technology, a competitive result in the national admission test.
  • Adequate personal preparation for the chosen programme, which UNIVPM checks at pre-evaluation.

Tips for applying to UNIVPM

  1. 1 Apply in the first call (mid-December to end of January) if you need a visa: it leaves time for Universitaly pre-enrolment and embassy appointments.
  2. 2 You can apply to only two programmes, so choose carefully; each application costs 10 euros.
  3. 3 Non-OECD citizens with a study visa pay only 156 euros in the first year and keep that rate if they earn the required credits (10 in year two, 25 later).
  4. 4 If you are from an OECD country, request an 'ISEE parificato' by early November; otherwise you pay the maximum fee for your course.
