NID was established in September 1961 as the National Institute of Industrial Design, following recommendations in Charles and Ray Eames’s India Report. Its development joined design education to India’s industrial, cultural and social needs, with an educational philosophy centered on learning through direct experience. Parliament subsequently declared National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad an Institution of National Importance through the NID Act, 2014. Admission to the B.Des. and M.Des. for 2026–27 was conducted through the official NID admissions portal. Both routes use a two-stage Design Aptitude Test process: DAT Prelims followed by DAT Mains for shortlisted candidates. Performance in the tests, category rules, merit and stated preferences determine progression and seat allocation; submitting an application or appearing in a test does not create an entitlement to admission. The 2026–27 application deadline was 1 December 2025, and DAT Prelims was held on 21 December 2025. Those dates have passed and must not be reused for a later intake. As of August 2026, the admissions portal was publishing final results and information on admitted-candidate ranks and scores. Prospective 2027–28 applicants should wait for the next official handbook and amendment notices rather than extrapolating this schedule. B.Des. applicants must meet the handbook’s age and qualifying-examination rules. M.Des. applicants must satisfy both age and prior-degree requirements; candidates awaiting final results in the 2026–27 cycle had to provide qualifying evidence by the specified 2026 deadline. Overseas applicants, including OCI and PIO cardholders under the handbook’s rules, apply through the overseas supernumerary category. All courses are taught in English. The four-year B.Des. is offered at the Ahmedabad campus in eight disciplines: Animation Film Design, Ceramic and Glass Design, Exhibition Design, Film and Video Communication, Furniture and Interior Design, Graphic Design, Product Design and Textile Design. This range spans communication, industrial and textile-related design while retaining a common institutional emphasis on experimentation and practical work. For 2026–27, Ahmedabad-based M.Des. choices are Animation Film Design, Film and Video Communication, Graphic Design, Ceramic and Glass Design, Furniture and Interior Design, Product Design and Textile Design. The M.Des. lasts two and a half years. Other master’s disciplines, including Interaction Design, New Media Design and Strategic Design Management, are assigned to Bengaluru or Gandhinagar; applicants should check the campus shown in the current handbook before selecting a discipline. NID describes its pedagogy as learning by doing. Academic facilities supporting that approach include discipline studios and laboratories, along with the Design Vision Centre at Paldi. Its shared facilities include computer-aided industrial design, rapid product development, high-performance visualization and the Railway Design Centre; students use rapid-prototyping equipment including laser cutting and 3D printing. The Knowledge Management Centre combines print, digital and audiovisual resources with prototypes, student diploma projects, craft documentation and research reports. International Open Electives provide short multidisciplinary workshops for eligible B.Des. and M.Des. cohorts across the three campuses. Student Life & Environment

Student life is closely connected to studio work, workshops and cross-disciplinary interaction. The Student Activity Committee is the institute’s student-facing sociocultural organization. Its committees and groups support sports, entertainment, canteen-related matters, social events and cultural activities. NID also reports indoor and outdoor sports facilities and a gymnasium across its campuses. The institute facilitates access to professional counsellors by appointment. This is useful support, but applicants who need ongoing health or accessibility services should confirm the current arrangements directly before enrolling. NID also maintains anti-ragging structures and identifies hostel wardens for the Ahmedabad campus. Hostel facilities exist at Ahmedabad, but availability and arrangements differ by study level and gender. An older official admissions FAQ states that NID does not help students find off-campus accommodation; because that FAQ relates to an earlier admissions cycle, students entering in 2026–27 should obtain written confirmation of current hostel eligibility, allocation, charges and move-in arrangements. The main campus is in Paldi, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, at National Institute of Design, Paldi, Ahmedabad 380007. This is the campus associated with the institute’s founding and with all eight B.Des. disciplines. Ahmedabad is also the assigned location for seven M.Des. disciplines, but the institution’s other master’s programs may require study at Gandhinagar or Bengaluru. The Paldi setting places students within a major Indian city rather than on an isolated residential site. For a design student, the city provides an urban context in which architecture, industry, crafts, visual culture and public services can become subjects for observation and project work. NID’s own history emphasizes the relationship between Indian traditions, modern technology and practical problem-solving. Applicants should base housing and commuting plans on their named campus. Gandhinagar is a separate extension campus elsewhere in Gujarat, while Bengaluru is in Karnataka. An offer from NID Ahmedabad as the legal institution does not necessarily mean that every M.Des. student studies at Paldi. Costs & Career Outcomes

NID publishes separate official 2026–27 fee schedules for the B.Des. and M.Des. These should be treated as the controlling cost sources because charges vary by program, semester and applicant category. The schedules are separate from application fees, and students should also establish whether hostel, mess, deposits, materials, equipment, travel and personal project production are included or payable independently. Overseas-category candidates are subject to the overseas fee category. Applicants should retain a current downloaded fee schedule and confirm the amount due at each enrollment stage before making financial commitments. For context, the 2026–27 B.Des. application fee—not tuition—was INR 3,000 for General, General-EWS and OBC-NCL Indian applicants, with reduced fees for specified groups; overseas applicants paid the rupee equivalent of US$125. These figures apply only to that completed cycle and should not be assumed for 2027–28. Career preparation is tied to portfolios, graduation projects and industry engagement. NID operates an Industry Interface and Placement Office in Ahmedabad, and its 2026 portal allowed participating organizations to review student CVs and portfolios, shortlist candidates and conduct interviews.
