Student Life & Environment

Student experience at NDU is shaped by professional cohorts rather than a conventional residential undergraduate model. Official AY2026–27 information describes a community drawn from the U.S. Joint Force, federal agencies, the private sector, and more than 60 partner nations. Seminar work, interaction among services and agencies, and engagement with international fellows are central to the learning environment. Students should expect demanding full-time study in the resident master’s programs and substantial contact with classmates who already hold professional responsibilities. Incoming students use the NDU Connect portal for onboarding and receive separate instructions based on college, program, citizenship, and military or civilian status. Support functions include admissions administration, registration, records, degree audits, graduation services, and academic catalogs through Enrollment Management and Student Services. NDU also provides incoming-student access to library information and program-specific orientation resources. Housing arrangements require advance planning. NDU’s military-student guidance directs students and families to housing offices at installations around the National Capital Region and to government-supported rental resources. Civilian guidance similarly points students toward off-campus housing information. Access to Fort McNair is controlled, and students without federal access credentials may need to complete a gate-access request. These conditions make the experience closer to attendance at a secure professional institution than life on an open civilian campus.

Location & Surroundings

NDU’s main campus is in Marshall Hall at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D.C. Four established resident colleges conduct master’s education there, placing students close to the Department of Defense, federal departments, Congress, diplomatic missions, and national-security organizations. The university presents this proximity as a source of access to government, industry, and international leaders, while some programs incorporate visits to agencies and operational commands. NDU is not confined to Washington. The Joint Forces Staff College operates a branch campus in Norfolk, Virginia, and CISA delivers its Joint Special Operations master’s program at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Following the 2026 transfer of National Intelligence University, MSCHE also records a branch campus in Bethesda, Maryland, plus intelligence-related instructional locations in the United States and the United Kingdom. Applicants must confirm the delivery site for their exact program rather than assuming all study occurs in Washington. Fort McNair is an active military installation, so entry procedures differ from those at an open urban campus. Commuting, housing, and credential requirements should be arranged through the applicable student instructions and sponsoring organization.

Costs & Career Outcomes

NDU does not publish a conventional university-wide tuition and living-cost schedule for the general public. Costs and payment arrangements depend on the student’s college, program, sponsoring organization, and status. CISA’s current admissions page says tuition for its full-time and non-degree programs is established through the student’s parent agency or department and directs candidates to request the current rate from the college. Older cost figures should not be used as 2026 prices. Applicants should obtain written confirmation of tuition, fees, travel funding, books or equipment, and any continuing salary or benefits from both the sponsoring organization and the relevant NDU program. Housing is another individualized expense. Official guidance points military and civilian students toward installation housing offices and off-campus rental resources in the National Capital Region rather than providing a standard room-and-board charge. Program location can materially affect the budget because NDU also teaches in Norfolk, Fort Bragg, Bethesda, and other approved locations. Career outcomes should be interpreted differently from those of civilian universities. NDU reports that almost all participants are already employed during enrollment and for several years afterward because students are selected by services, agencies, departments, or countries. The institution therefore does not offer a meaningful conventional placement rate for comparison. Its degrees and professional education are principally intended to prepare already-serving personnel for strategic, joint, intelligence, cyber, interagency, and national-security leadership assignments; specific promotion or employment outcomes are not guaranteed.
