About NYCU
National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University was created on February 1, 2021, by merging National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) in Hsinchu and National Yang-Ming University (NYMU) in Taipei. NCTU was re-established in Taiwan in 1958 as an institute of electronics and grew into one of Taiwan's leading schools for electronics and ICT; Yang-Ming was a medical and biomedical university in Beitou, Taipei. The merger was designed to combine Chiao Tung's strengths in information and communications technology with Yang Ming's biomedical research, and to build fields between them such as digital medicine and bioinformatics.
Today NYCU has about 8,900 undergraduates, 13,600 graduate students, 1,100 full-time faculty and 1,300 international students. Its colleges span electrical and computer engineering, computer science, semiconductor technology, photonics, science, engineering, medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, life sciences, management, law, humanities and Hakka studies, spread across campuses in Hsinchu (Guangfu and Boai), Taipei (Yangming) and elsewhere.
International bachelor's students apply directly to individual departments. Most undergraduate teaching is in Chinese, so NYCU suits students who want a top Taiwanese education in engineering, computing or medicine and are prepared to study in Mandarin, while its many English-taught programs are mainly at graduate level.
Why students choose NYCU
Deep chip-industry ties: TSMC sponsored NYCU's Department of Microelectronics, and TSMC chairman C. C. Wei and Acer founder Stan Shih both studied at National Chiao Tung University.
Undergraduate tuition at the Chiaotung campus is about NT$49,540 to NT$57,890 per semester for international students.
New international students can be considered for the NYCU International Student Scholarship, a monthly stipend and/or tuition waiver, simply by ticking the scholarship box in the admission application.
Applicants can apply to up to three departments, and some colleges, including Medicine and Life Sciences, charge no application fee.

Student life
Student life is split between campuses: the Guangfu and Boai campuses in Hsinchu, and the Yangming campus in Beitou, Taipei, with dormitories on each. The biggest sporting tradition is the Meichu Games, an annual contest against neighbouring National Tsing Hua University that dates back to 1969. On the Taipei side, the Yangmingshan Grand Traverse takes students and staff across the national park's hiking trails each spring, and the long-running Yang-Ming Crusade club does community preventive healthcare. The university fields varsity teams in ten sports.
- Meichu Games against National Tsing Hua University, held every year since 1969.
- Yangmingshan Grand Traverse hike each April or May.
- Varsity teams in ten sports, from basketball and baseball to archery.
- Yang-Ming Crusade, a student community-health club founded in 1978.
Housing. Dormitories are available on the Yangming (Taipei) and Guangfu and Boai (Hsinchu) campuses; the university estimates NT$17,210 per semester for a four-person room at Yangming and NT$8,000-20,500 at Chiaotung.
Location
NYCU's main engineering campuses are in Hsinchu, a city in northwestern Taiwan with a large technology industry, while the medical Yangming campus is in Beitou on the northern edge of Taipei. Shuttle buses link the campuses and Hsinchu's high-speed rail station. Students get a mix of a tech-industry city and the capital.
