About NJUST

Nanjing University of Science and Technology (NJUST) traces its roots to 1953, when it was split off from the PLA Military Engineering Institute in Harbin, China's top military engineering school at the time. It went through several names, including East China Institute of Technology, and took its current name in 1993. Today it is a national key university under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class programme, with more than 35,000 full-time students and 3,700 staff.

NJUST is organised into 21 schools, plus Qian Xuesen College, a Sino-French Engineer School run with the University of Lorraine, and a School of International Education for foreign students. Its strongest clusters are weapons and equipment, information and control, and chemical engineering and materials. Twelve subjects are in the ESI global top 1%, and engineering, materials science, chemistry and computer science are in the top 0.1%.

For international undergraduates, NJUST offers four-year degrees taught in Chinese or English. The English-taught majors are Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, International Economy and Trade, and Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology. From 2026 every applicant must take the CSCA, China's new entrance test for international undergraduates. Tuition is CNY 18,000-19,800 a year, which is low even by Chinese standards. NJUST suits applicants who want a serious engineering education in a large, affordable city.

02

Four majors are taught fully in English: Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, International Economy and Trade, and Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology.

03

The university-funded Lanshan Scholarship covers undergraduates at four levels, up to free tuition and housing plus CNY 1,000 a month.

04

Engineering, materials science, chemistry and computer science are in the ESI global top 0.1%, and NJUST chemists made the world's first pentazolate anion salt.

Admissions

September 2027 intake (NJUST's latest published admissions guide is for the past 2026 intake)

Selectivity

NJUST does not publish an admission rate for international undergraduates. Applications are reviewed for completeness, then scored by an expert panel that includes an online interview and CSCA results.

Testing Required from 2026: the CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) in the subjects set for each major. English-taught Mechanical Engineering and Software Engineering need Mathematics and Physics in English; International Economy and Trade needs Mathematics in English; Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology needs Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in English. Chinese-taught majors need Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry in Chinese plus STEM or Humanities Chinese.

Typical entry requirements

Deadlines

  1. Lanshan Scholarship (2026 intake) - PAST CYCLE, for reference only Non-binding Passed
    May 15, 2026 (closed)

Scholarship applications ran from November 30, 2025 and closed a month before the general deadline.

  2. 2026 intake, undergraduate application - PAST CYCLE, for reference only Non-binding Passed
    June 15, 2026 (closed)

Previous cycle: the application system opened November 30, 2025. Conditional offers went out in batches from January to June, results were published in July and admission letters with the JW202 visa form were sent in early August.

NJUST's latest undergraduate guide is for the 2026 intake (applications November 30, 2025 to June 15, 2026; Lanshan Scholarship by May 15, 2026). A 2027 guide had not been published as of September 29, 2026; expect a similar late-autumn opening, and apply by mid-May if you want a scholarship.

How to apply

Take the CSCA subjects for your major, then apply online at njust.17gz.org with your passport, CSCA score report (or registration proof), notarised diploma and stamped transcripts, language certificate, a personal statement of at least 800 words, two teacher recommendation letters, the Foreigner Physical Examination Form, a no-criminal-record certificate and proof of funds. Pay the non-refundable CNY 500 application fee, then take an online interview as part of the expert review.

What admissions looks for

  • CSCA scores, which the guide calls the main academic reference.
  • High school grades and language level (HSK 4 for Chinese-taught, IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 80 for English-taught programmes).
  • Interview performance and overall quality, including recommendation letters and experience in international competitions or research.
  • A good fit between your academic background and the chosen major.

Tips for applying to NJUST

  1. 1 You can apply with CSCA registration proof, but the official score report must reach NJUST before the application deadline.
  2. 2 English-taught majors only run with at least 8 enrolled students, so name a second-choice major (you may list one first choice and one alternative).
  3. 3 You can't apply for self-funded and Lanshan places at the same level at once; strong self-funded applicants may be moved onto the scholarship during review.
  4. 4 Chinese Government Scholarship places at NJUST (Silk Road and High-level Postgraduate programmes) are for master's and PhD students, so undergraduates should target the Lanshan Scholarship.
