About MMU

Multimedia University (MMU) grew out of a Telekom Malaysia training institute that opened in Taiping in 1994 with 42 diploma students. In 1996 it was upgraded to Universiti Telekom, the first private university in Malaysia, and it moved to Bukit Beruang in Melaka in 1997. When Telekom Malaysia was asked to build a campus for the Multimedia Super Corridor, the Cyberjaya campus opened in July 1999 and the university took its current name; the link with the corridor was meant to mirror Stanford and Silicon Valley.

Today MMU runs two campuses. Cyberjaya is home to computing, AI and engineering, creative multimedia, cinematic arts, applied communication and management; Melaka hosts engineering and technology, information science and technology, business and law, plus a foundation centre. QS lists about 8,450 students and 824 academic staff, with roughly 2,400 international students. Since 2022 the university has been integrated with TM R&D, Telekom Malaysia's research arm, and it reports seven Centres of Excellence with more than 800 researchers from academia and industry.

MMU suits students who want an applied, industry-facing degree in computing, engineering, animation, film or business at a private-university price that is still moderate by international standards. Entry is through a foundation year, A-levels, STPM, UEC or a diploma, and there are several intakes a year. MMU says it has produced more than 80,000 graduates.

Admissions

March/April 2027 intake (international students); October 2026 and March/April 2027 intakes (Malaysian students)

Selectivity

MMU does not publish an acceptance rate. Admission is by meeting each programme's minimum entry requirements plus internal selection criteria.

Testing No admissions tests. Admission is based on school or pre-university results; international students also need an approved English test.

Typical entry requirements

A-levelsMinimum pass: Grade D in any two subjects for most degrees; Computer Science needs Grade D in Mathematics and one Science/ICT subject (or two passes plus a credit in SPM Additional Mathematics or equivalent)
Foundation / MatriculationPass with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 (e.g. Computer Science); MMU runs its own one-year foundation programmes
STPMMinimum Grade C (GP 2.00) in two subjects (Computer Science: Mathematics and one Science/ICT subject)
UECGrade B in at least five subjects including Mathematics, English and one Science/ICT subject (Computer Science)
DiplomaRelevant diploma with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 to 2.75 depending on the programme
English languageIELTS 5 · TOEFL iBT 40 International students need IELTS 5.0 for engineering, computer science, IT, accounting and communication degrees, 5.5 for multimedia, cinematic arts and most business degrees, and 6.0 for Finance and Financial Engineering. MMU's equivalency table maps IELTS 5.0 to TOEFL iBT 40 (5.5 = 46, 6.0 = 60). Students without a qualifying score can get a conditional offer and take MMU's English Proficiency Programme first. How to apply

Apply online through MMU's application portal. International applicants submit academic results and an English test score; after an offer, MMU applies for the Student Pass through EMGS (about 6 to 8 weeks), and students then obtain an entry visa.

What admissions looks for

  • Passes at the stated minimum grades in the relevant pre-university qualification, with CGPA thresholds for foundation and diploma holders.
  • Mathematics at the right level for computing and engineering programmes (Additional Mathematics or an equivalent), or reinforcement Mathematics in the first trimester.
  • An approved English test score at the programme's level for international students (IELTS 5.0 to 6.0 or equivalent).
  • Meeting each programme's internal selection criteria.

Tips for applying to MMU

  1. 1 Check the English score for your specific programme: Finance needs IELTS 6.0, while Computer Science and Engineering need 5.0.
  2. 2 If your English score is short, you can still receive a conditional offer and complete MMU's English Proficiency Programme before starting the degree.
  3. 3 Pick your campus deliberately: law, business and some engineering and IT degrees are in Melaka, while AI, computing, multimedia and film are in Cyberjaya.
  4. 4 Allow 6 to 8 weeks for the Student Pass after your offer, and budget for the one-time payment due on acceptance: RM10,100 under the October 2026 fee schedule (registration RM2,000, student visa processing RM3,600, deposit RM1,500 and a RM3,000 advance programme fee).
