Université de Montpellier Paul-Valéry is an independent, degree-granting public institution within France’s higher-education system. Decree No. 2024-840 created the present experimental public institution, effective 1 January 2025, and transferred to it all activities of Université Montpellier-III. The change therefore represents institutional continuity and restructuring, not the closure of the university or its teaching operations. The École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Montpellier and Centre international de musique médiévale participate as component institutions within the experimental structure. The university’s roots as Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 date to the 1970 reorganization of Montpellier’s former faculties into separate universities.
