About MDX
Middlesex University traces its history to 1878, when St Katharine's College opened in Tottenham as one of Britain's first teacher training colleges. Its founding colleges, including Hornsey College of Art, merged into Middlesex Polytechnic in 1973, and it became a university in 1992. The university says it now supports more than 37,000 students and apprentices across London, Dubai and Mauritius, with over 15,000 students and 1,700 staff at its main campus in Hendon, north London.
Teaching in London is organised into four faculties: Arts and Creative Industries; Business and Law; Health, Social Care and Education; and Science and Technology. The emphasis is on career-focused courses, work placements and professional accreditation, and the university runs degree apprenticeships alongside standard degrees. Its research is organised in centres such as the Flood Hazard Research Centre, the Drug and Alcohol Research Centre and the European Human Rights Advocacy Centre.
Middlesex suits students who want a London degree with realistic entry grades: most undergraduate courses ask for 80-112 UCAS points (for example BB-BBC at A-level) for 2027 entry. International students made up 49% of students in THE's 2026 data, so classes are very mixed. Former students include Helen Mirren, Anish Kapoor and Ray Davies, who studied at colleges that later became part of the university.
