Student Life & Environment

Student experience differs between the two campuses. In Sundsvall, the campus is within walking distance of the city centre and is arranged around the riverside Åkroken area. The university identifies nearby student-union facilities, a pub, restaurant, common areas and outdoor courts. Östersund's campus is also close to its central shopping area and occupies a converted former regiment district, with Studenternas hus serving as a meeting place. Student unions represent students in educational and social matters. They arrange welcome activities at the beginning of semesters and organize further events, trips and social activities. University support includes IT services, student health care, study support, international relations, disability-related support, career services and study guidance. The university does not own or directly provide student housing. Students apply to external housing companies after admission and are responsible for securing and managing their tenancy. The municipalities offer a housing guarantee to students admitted for full-time study of 30 credits per semester in Sundsvall or Östersund, subject to the applicable conditions. The university's campuses are in two separate central-Swedish cities approximately 180 kilometres apart. Sundsvall lies on Sweden's east coast, about 400 kilometres north of Stockholm. Its campus is close to the centre and follows the Selångersån river, giving students access to city services without placing the university in an isolated campus district. Östersund lies northwest of Sundsvall, near Lake Storsjön and the mountain region toward Åre. Its campus is a short walk from the central shopping street. The setting is particularly relevant to students interested in year-round outdoor recreation: the university highlights skiing, trekking and fishing around Östersund, while Sundsvall offers sports facilities, maintained ski trails and access to both urban and natural environments. Applicants should base their housing search on the city attached to their programme. Travel between campuses is not an ordinary cross-town commute, and a programme offered in one city should not be treated as conveniently accessible from the other.

Costs & Career Outcomes

Swedish citizens and citizens of EU/EEA countries or Switzerland do not pay tuition at Mid Sweden University. Students participating through an official exchange agreement are also exempt regardless of citizenship. Other international students generally pay tuition, with the amount varying by programme and study level.
