Sign up to see your chancesMohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence is a government-funded research university in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi. Established in 2019, it holds UAE Commission for Academic Accreditation licensure and offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Its academic scope is unusually concentrated: undergraduate students complete a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence through Business or Engineering streams, while graduate students specialize in AI and adjacent fields such as machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, computer science, statistics and data science, and computational biology. The single-campus setting combines teaching, research, accommodation, and student services. Prospective students should compare funding conditions carefully by degree: undergraduate scholarships may cover up to the full cost of attendance, while the funding model for students entering graduate programs in Fall 2027 differs among M.Sc., Ph.D., and applied master’s routes.
About Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence
Established under Abu Dhabi Law No. 25 of 2019, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence operates as a specialized, government-funded university with a single campus in Masdar City. The UAE Commission for Academic Accreditation lists the institution as active, and MBZUAI states that it is licensed to award accredited higher-education degrees. Its official provision now spans bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral study, marking a significant expansion from its original graduate-level focus. The university is designed for students who want artificial intelligence to be the central subject of their education rather than one option within a broad comprehensive university. This narrow focus shapes its curriculum, research environment, facilities, employer connections, and student community. Research and teaching extend from foundational AI areas into computer science, robotics, human-computer interaction, statistics, data science, and computational biology. MBZUAI is fully funded by the UAE government and affiliated with the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. Students should nevertheless avoid assuming that every admission carries identical financial support. Scholarship and funding arrangements vary substantially by undergraduate, research master’s, Ph.D., and professional applied-master’s route. The university’s relatively recent establishment also means some offerings are new: several departments welcomed, or planned to welcome, their first cohorts in 2025 or 2026. Applicants who value a mature, broad disciplinary ecosystem should weigh that context against the benefits of an institution devoted specifically to AI.

How Admissions Work
For Fall 2027 undergraduate entry, the application portal is scheduled to open on September 1, 2026. The Early Action deadline is November 1, 2026, with decisions by January 15, 2027; the Regular Decision deadline is February 1, 2027, with decisions by April 1, 2027. Applications require secondary-school records, a personal statement, a CV, and supporting identity documents. Recommendations and a technical portfolio are encouraged but not mandatory. Applicants complete an online screening examination covering mathematics, computational thinking, programming fundamentals, and data and AI reasoning; shortlisted candidates may be interviewed. Previous coding experience is not required, although demonstrated ability can strengthen an application. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an accepted proficiency result. The undergraduate page lists minimum overall scores including IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, PTE Academic 60, Cambridge C1 Advanced 180, Cambridge C2 Proficiency 200, or Duolingo 120 under stated access conditions. Results must be valid and submitted with the application. For Fall 2027 graduate entry, applications open September 1, 2026 and close December 15, 2026, with decisions by March 31, 2027. Research-program applicants generally need a recognized STEM degree and a program-dependent minimum CGPA of 3.0 or 3.5 on a four-point scale. Required materials include transcripts, a CV, statement of purpose, recommendations, English evidence, and, for Ph.D. applicants, a research statement. Screening and a possible technical interview form part of the process. Both undergraduate and graduate applicants pay an AED 200 application fee, subject to the university’s stated waiver or reimbursement conditions.
Academic Experience
At undergraduate level, MBZUAI offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence with Business and Engineering streams. Both follow a 3+1 structure: three years of coursework followed by a final-year industry placement. The Engineering stream devotes more of the curriculum to AI, computer science, and mathematics, while the Business stream combines AI foundations with business, leadership, and general education. Students may change streams if they complete the relevant requirements, but the university does not accept transfer credit; admitted undergraduates begin in the first year. Lectures are taught in English. Graduate study includes research-oriented M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs across areas such as machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, computer science, statistics and data science, and computational biology. Doctoral provision also includes human-computer interaction. Some areas are recent additions: computational biology’s first M.Sc. and Ph.D. cohorts were scheduled for 2026, while human-computer interaction planned its first Ph.D. cohort for 2026. The Master in Applied Artificial Intelligence is a separate, part-time, on-campus, project-based program aimed principally at professionals working in the UAE. Experiential requirements are prominent. The bachelor’s program includes an eight-week internship after year two and a year-long industry placement in its final year. Master’s and Ph.D. students must complete an internship before graduation. The academic setting is therefore best suited to students seeking concentrated technical or applied AI study and willing to commit early to this field, rather than those wanting extensive exploration across unrelated majors.

Student Life & Environment
MBZUAI’s compact residential campus brings classrooms, laboratories, accommodation, recreation, and daily services together in Masdar City. Purpose-built facilities include a library and knowledge center, auditorium, multipurpose hall, canteen, gyms, sports areas, and student residences. The surrounding district adds restaurants, cafes, groceries, healthcare, pharmacies, green spaces, and other practical services within a walkable area. Student-led clubs may focus on AI research, entrepreneurship, community service, cultural interests, or the arts. Undergraduate Student Government represents students, supports clubs, allocates activity funding, and helps organize community initiatives. The events calendar includes orientation activities, UAE National Day, International Night, hackathons, sports, and cultural excursions. These opportunities matter at a specialized university where much of the academic community shares similar technical interests. Support services include advising, health services, IT assistance, prayer rooms, dining, student lounges, and accessibility-related accommodations. Undergraduate students have access to free confidential counseling, wellbeing workshops, and mental-health support. Residential Life Assistants provide peer support and organize activities in the residence halls. Housing eligibility and financial treatment should still be confirmed against the student’s offer: official pages distinguish scholarship-linked accommodation in some places, while broader FAQ language says housing is provided to students. Applicants should rely on their individual award and housing documentation.
Location & Surroundings
The university occupies one campus in Masdar City, an eastern Abu Dhabi development planned around sustainability, clean technology, business, and residential uses. The setting is more self-contained and innovation-oriented than a conventional city-center university district. Walkable paths, electric transport, nearby food outlets, supermarkets, medical services, parks, and offices make routine campus life convenient, especially for students living in university accommodation. MBZUAI states that the campus is about five kilometers from Zayed International Airport. Central Abu Dhabi is farther away; the university’s FAQ estimates roughly 30 minutes by car and identifies taxis and app-based car services as common options. Yas Island’s leisure attractions are also nearby. This location can suit students who want a residential environment close to technology companies and an international airport, but students expecting to walk directly into central Abu Dhabi should understand the geographic separation. Abu Dhabi is the UAE’s federal capital. International students should prepare for a multicultural urban environment shaped by local law, Islamic traditions, and UAE social norms. Climate, transport costs, and the practical conditions attached to campus housing deserve consideration when planning a budget.
Costs & Career Outcomes
The official undergraduate admissions page for Fall 2027 lists annual tuition of USD 45,000 plus an additional cost of attendance. Merit-based and need-based scholarships can cover up to 100% of tuition and attendance costs, but this is not a universal full-funding promise. Applicants should obtain a written breakdown covering tuition, housing, meals, insurance, and other charges before accepting an offer. Graduate funding for Fall 2027 is program-specific. Ph.D. students receive central university funding in year one while matching with an adviser; continuation depends on confirming that match and maintaining satisfactory progress. M.Sc. entrants are fee-paying by default, although merit funding, a faculty-sponsored research or teaching assistantship, or an approved government scholarship may provide support. The university had not yet published Fall 2027 M.Sc. cost-of-attendance figures as of August 20, 2026. Funded M.Sc. and Ph.D. packages include tuition, a monthly stipend, annual return airfare, health insurance, and eligible visa costs. The professional Master in Applied Artificial Intelligence is excluded from this funding model and lists total tuition of AED 170,000 for 34 credits. Career preparation is built into the curricula through required internships and the undergraduate final-year placement. Career Services provides individual guidance, labor-market information, application support, workshops, employer events, and a careers portal for internships and jobs. Graduates retain portal access after finishing. These resources and employer relationships can support a job search, but the university does not establish a guaranteed placement, salary, or employment outcome on the cited pages.
