About MUNI

Masaryk University was founded in Brno on 28 January 1919, soon after Czechoslovakia became independent, with faculties of Law, Medicine, Science and Arts, and is named after the country's first president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. It is the second-largest university in the Czech Republic, with about 30,500 students, 10 faculties and around 400 study programmes, and it graduates about 7,000 students a year.

Most programmes are taught in Czech and are tuition-free, but MUNI also runs fee-paying English-taught degrees across its faculties: long-cycle General Medicine and Dentistry, Pharmacy, bachelor's degrees in economics and business, social studies such as International Relations and European Politics, arts and education, and science programmes such as Biology and Biochemistry. Each faculty sets its own admission process, from written entrance exams in medicine to essays, motivation videos and interviews in the social sciences.

The university combines historic buildings in central Brno with the modern Bohunice campus for medicine and biology, which cost over five billion CZK to build, and it shares the CEITEC life sciences research centre with partner institutions. It suits students who want a broad European university at relatively low cost, including those aiming for an English-taught medical degree in Central Europe.

Why students choose MUNI

01

Czech-taught programmes are tuition-free, and English-taught bachelor's programmes such as Business Management and Finance cost 120,000 CZK a year.

02

English-taught General Medicine and Dentistry are admitted by written tests in chemistry, biology and physics, with preparatory courses offered by the Faculty of Medicine.

03

The university runs the Johann Gregor Mendel research station on James Ross Island in Antarctica.

04

Brno has more than 80,000 students, and MUNI has over 70 student clubs, including an International Student Club with a buddy programme.

How to apply

Apply online through the MUNI e-application in the Information System, choosing a specific programme and faculty. Upload your school-leaving certificate (or confirmation of expected graduation) with certified translation, proof of English and programme-specific documents such as a statement of purpose, essay or motivation video; medicine and pharmacy applicants sit entrance exams. Foreign secondary education must be recognised in the Czech Republic before enrolment.

What admissions looks for

  • For medicine and dentistry, results in written multiple-choice tests in chemistry, biology and physics.
  • At ECON MUNI, proven English, previous study results, academic competence (e.g. IB 28+ with maths) and genuine motivation shown in a two-minute video.
  • At the Faculty of Arts, a statement of purpose, English skills and school results, followed by an online interview for those who pass the first round.
  • At the Faculty of Social Studies, a B2 English certificate and success in an entrance exam or online interview, depending on the programme.

Tips for applying to MUNI

  1. 1 Check which faculty runs your programme: deadlines range from 28 February (Science) to 31 July (Medicine).
  2. 2 Start the recognition of your foreign school-leaving certificate early, as it must be completed before enrolment.
  3. 3 For ECON MUNI, make your motivation video personal: the faculty says it wants your own words, not AI scripts or generic praise.
  4. 4 Medicine applicants can buy the faculty's e-learning preparatory courses, which the faculty says increase the chance of passing the entrance tests.
