About Mansoura

Mansoura University sits in the middle of the Nile Delta. Its Faculty of Medicine opened in 1962 as a branch of Cairo University, and a presidential decree in 1972 created the university as East Delta University; it took the name Mansoura University in 1973. The university describes itself as the sixth university founded in Egypt, with a campus of roughly 300 acres on the south-west side of the city.

It is big. The university's own facts page lists 18 colleges, 24 hospitals and a medical centre on and off campus, 29 libraries, 7,315 teaching staff members and 181,963 students in Mansoura, of whom 32,864 are postgraduates and 3,285 are international students. The colleges include Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering, Agriculture, Science, Commerce, Law, Arts, Computers and Information, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine and Tourism and Hotels.

Medicine and the health sciences are the university's public face, backed by specialised hospitals such as its urology and nephrology, gastroenterology surgery, oncology and ophthalmology centres, and its children's hospital. The university also runs a Vertebrate Paleontology Center, whose team described the dinosaur Mansourasaurus in 2018. It suits students who want a very large public university with hospital-based clinical training and who are comfortable in a big, busy system; check in advance which programmes are offered to international students.
