About LSBU

London South Bank University opened in 1892 as the Borough Polytechnic Institute in Southwark, became a university in 1992 and took its current name in 2003. Its main campus sits at Elephant and Castle, a short walk from the Thames, with a second campus in central Croydon focused on health courses. LSBU is part of the LSBU Group, which also includes South Bank Colleges, London South Bank Technical College and South Bank University Academy, so students can move from school or college into degree study within one organisation.

Teaching is organised into three colleges: Health and Life Sciences (nursing, midwifery and allied health), Technology and Environment (architecture, construction, engineering and computing) and Society and Professions (the Business School plus law, arts and education). Many degrees are accredited by professional bodies, such as RIBA Part 1 for Architecture and IMechE for Mechanical Engineering, and the university leans hard on employability: according to the 2026 LEO data, its graduates earn a median of £31,500 one year after graduating, the highest among London modern universities.

LSBU suits students who want a practical, career-focused degree in central London without top-tier grade requirements: most courses ask for around 96 to 120 UCAS points. It also has unusual specialisms, including a Baking Science and Technology degree whose roots go back to the National School of Bakery and Confectionery, opened at the polytechnic in 1894.

What admissions looks for

  • Evidence of motivation and commitment, alongside aptitude and potential.
  • A good grounding in maths, communication and IT.
  • Knowledge of and interest in the subject you are applying to.
  • Relevant skills, knowledge or experience gained outside formal education, which can count if you do not meet the standard entry criteria.

Tips for applying to LSBU

  1. 1 Check each course page's Entry Requirements tab: LSBU sets UCAS points per course, and some courses need specific GCSEs such as Maths at grade 4.
  2. 2 For Nursing, you may skip the MS Teams interview if your UCAS application shows at least six months of clinical experience, so describe it clearly.
  3. 3 International applicants should pay the £2,000 deposit within four weeks of meeting offer conditions to qualify for the Global Success Scholarship.
  4. 4 If you have AAB-equivalent grades, you may qualify for the £2,000-a-year Vice-Chancellor's International Merit Award.

Elephant Studios is the university's media production centre, and the Students' Union runs more than 50 sports clubs and societies. Housing. LSBU has two halls of residence with over 900 single rooms within a ten-minute walk of the Southwark campus, with gas, water, electricity, Wi-Fi and gym access included in the rent.

Location

Elephant and Castle is a busy, fast-changing part of the London Borough of Southwark in Zone 1, close to the South Bank, Waterloo and the City, and much of central London is within walking or cycling distance. Rents are high by UK standards, so LSBU's below-market halls and the higher London maintenance loan rate matter for budgeting.
