Kwara State University is a state-owned Nigerian university whose main campus is at Malete, outside the Kwara State capital. The institution’s founding law was signed on December 24, 2008, and the National Universities Commission issued its certificate and instrument to operate on February 9, 2009. Academic operations began in October 2009, with lectures starting in December. The university therefore uses 2009 as its establishment year. The institution has expanded substantially from its five pioneer colleges. Its current structure comprises a College of Health Sciences, a School of Postgraduate Studies, and 13 faculties. Postgraduate education began in the 2014/2015 academic session. More recent development has included the growth of health-science education, the creation of an Environmental Sciences faculty, and movement toward a three-campus model. For 2026/2027 undergraduate entry, KWASU invited candidates applying through Nigeria’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry routes. Candidates were required either to have selected KWASU as their first choice or to change their first-choice institution to KWASU through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board portal before completing the university’s screening registration. The published assessment formula assigns 70 percent to the UTME or Direct Entry score and 30 percent to five relevant O’level grades. The official registration window ran from June 11 to July 10, 2026, with a non-refundable screening fee of NGN 2,000. Graduate applicants generally need a first degree from a recognized university and must also satisfy KWASU’s O’level requirements. The university states a minimum of second-class lower division for academic or professional master’s entry. KWASU offers undergraduate and postgraduate education across a broad academic structure. Approved postgraduate additions include master’s and doctoral study in Fine and Applied Arts and Performing Arts, an MA in Linguistics, and further qualifications in Food Science and Technology, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Public Administration, and Mass Communication. The university’s medical development is comparatively recent. Medicine and Surgery began after regulatory approval in 2022, and the university reports that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria authorized the MBBS program to commence clinical training in March 2026. Applicants to newer or professionally regulated courses should verify the current curriculum, campus, accreditation position, and clinical or professional placement arrangements directly with the relevant faculty before accepting an offer. KWASU also advertises distance, sandwich, and professional routes, but these should not be assumed to cover every subject. The university discontinued its Top Up/HND Conversion program from the 2025/2026 session.

Student Life & Environment
