About IKBFU
Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (IKBFU) is a federal university in Kaliningrad, Russia's westernmost region. The university traces its lineage to the University of Konigsberg (Albertina), founded in 1544, where Immanuel Kant studied and taught; the modern institution began as Kaliningrad Pedagogical Institute in 1948, became Kaliningrad State University in 1967, and was given its present federal status and name later. Its main building in the old Albertina complex now houses the Institute of Medicine and Life Sciences.
The university reports more than 12,000 students, over 1,400 staff, 195 degree programmes, four scientific and educational institutes, 13 higher schools, a university college, students from 51 countries and 13 dormitories. Its four institutes are Education and the Humanities, High Technology, Management and Territorial Development, and Medicine and Life Sciences. Times Higher Education's 2026 data gives 6,711 students and 19% international, a different basis from the university's own count.
In 2026 the university reported a record intake of 4,440 students, including 351 international students from 23 countries, mostly from India, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, Belarus and Ecuador. It suits students who want a mid-sized Russian federal university in a Baltic city, with programmes in information security, medicine, management, economics, education, philosophy and Russian as a foreign language. Applicants should be ready for Russian-language paperwork and an application route through the Russian state services portal.
