About JKU

Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU) opened in 1966 as a college of social sciences, economics and business, added engineering and natural sciences in 1969 and law in 1975, and launched a Faculty of Medicine in 2014. It is named after the astronomer Johannes Kepler, who lived and worked in Linz. Today about 27,000 students are enrolled, more than 21% of them international from over 120 countries.

The university is organised into four faculties (Social Sciences, Economics and Business; Law; Engineering and Natural Sciences; Medicine) and six schools, including the Linz Institute of Technology and the Business School. Unusually for Austria, most institutes sit together on one park campus in the north-east of Linz, with a separate MED Campus opened in 2021.

Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German, but JKU offers English-taught bachelor's degrees in Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Science and Technology, International Business Administration, Biological Chemistry, Chemistry and Chemical Technology and Transformation Studies: Art x Science. Most programmes have no entrance exam, and non-EU tuition is €726.72 per semester, which makes JKU a strong option for students who want a technical or business degree in English at low cost.

Why students choose JKU

01

The English-taught Bachelor's in Artificial Intelligence (B2 English) covers machine learning, knowledge representation and AI and society, and JKU counts an AI Wittgenstein Award winner among its professors.

02

Non-EU students pay €726.72 per semester in tuition and EU/EEA students pay none within the standard study period plus two semesters.

03

International Business Administration is taught entirely in English and includes a mandatory semester abroad; JKU collaborates with over 170 universities worldwide.

04

Almost all institutes share one park campus with a pond, sports facilities and over 150 University Sports Institute classes a semester.

Selectivity

JKU does not publish an acceptance rate. Most bachelor's programmes admit applicants with a recognised university entrance qualification and the required language level; some popular programmes, such as International Business Administration and Human Medicine, have an admissions procedure.

Testing No standardised tests for most programmes. Programmes with an admissions procedure (e.g. International Business Administration, Human Medicine) have their own selection steps.
Grades Country-specific rules apply: for example, applicants with an Indian or Nepalese 12th-grade certificate need 70% or higher, and Pakistani applicants 80% or higher, otherwise extra university study is required.

Typical entry requirements

English (English-taught bachelor's)B2 for most English-taught programmes (e.g. Artificial Intelligence); C1 for International Business Administration
German (German-taught bachelor's)Level set per programme (see the programme's info box); accepted certificates listed on JKU's German proficiency page

How to apply

Create an applicant account and apply in JKU MyAdmission, choosing your programme and uploading your passport, secondary school certificates with all subjects and grades, language certificate and a photo. Applications are free and must be submitted by the applicant personally; applications via agencies are not processed. Programmes with an admissions procedure have extra steps.

What admissions looks for

  • A secondary school leaving certificate that gives general university access, meeting any country-specific grade thresholds.
  • The required language level for the programme: B2 or C1 English for English-taught programmes, German for German-taught ones.
  • For programmes with an admissions procedure, success in that procedure before enrolment.
  • A complete, legible application submitted personally and on time.

Tips for applying to JKU

  1. 1 Non-EU applicants must apply between 6 February and 31 March for a winter start, much earlier than EU applicants.
  2. 2 Check the country-specific rules: some national certificates, such as Bangladesh's HSC, are not enough on their own.
  3. 3 Apply yourself through MyAdmission: JKU rejects applications submitted by agencies, and applying is free.
  4. 4 Take the StEOP introductory courses in your first semester, as later courses build on them.
