About IIT Guwahati
IIT Guwahati was established in 1994 as the sixth Indian Institute of Technology, and teaching began in 1995. Its founding traces back to the 1985 Assam Accord, which included a commitment to set up an IIT in the state. Today it has eleven departments, seven interdisciplinary centres and five schools, including the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, offering B.Tech, B.Des, BS, master's and Ph.D. programmes.
The campus covers 285 hectares on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, about 20 km from central Guwahati, with the river on one side and hills on the others. It is fully residential, and its hostels are named after rivers of northeastern India. In 2024-25 it had about 3,900 undergraduates, 1,800 master's students and 2,000 Ph.D. scholars.
Admission to B.Tech follows the national IIT system: Indian students qualify through JEE (Main), sit JEE (Advanced) and pick programmes through JoSAA, while foreign nationals register for JEE (Advanced) directly. B.Des admission is through UCEED. IIT Guwahati suits students who want a full IIT education on a green, self-contained campus away from India's biggest metros.

Selectivity
IIT Guwahati does not publish an acceptance rate. For 2026, only the top 2,50,000 JEE (Main) candidates (plus directly registered foreign nationals) could sit JEE (Advanced), and seats were allotted by rank through JoSAA; the sanctioned 4-year UG intake was 1,018 in 2024-25.

How to apply
Indian nationals take JEE (Main), then JEE (Advanced) if they are in the top 2,50,000, and choose IIT Guwahati programmes during JoSAA counselling. Foreign nationals register directly for JEE (Advanced) (2026 fee at centres in India: USD 100 for SAARC residents, USD 200 for others; at centres abroad: USD 200 and USD 300) and compete for supernumerary seats. DASA does not cover IITs. B.Des applicants apply through UCEED.
What admissions looks for

- 3 Foreign nationals from SAARC countries pay half the non-SAARC tuition (₹1,50,000 versus ₹3,00,000 per semester).

Student life
IIT Guwahati is a fully residential campus, and its hostels are named after rivers of northeastern India, such as Manas, Dihing, Kapili, Siang, Subansiri and Brahmaputra. Student life centres on hostels, lakes and open spaces, and on big student-run festivals: Alcheringa, the cultural festival first held in 1996, and Techniche, the techno-management festival each September, which also runs the Technothlon exam for school students and the Guwahati Half Marathon. Other festivals cover sport (Spirit) and entrepreneurship (Udgam).
