About IIT Bombay
IIT Bombay was established in 1958 as the second Indian Institute of Technology, with support from UNESCO and the government of the USSR, and an Act of Parliament in 1961 made it an Institution of National Importance able to award its own degrees. Its campus covers about 200 hectares in Powai, Mumbai, and it was named an Institution of Eminence in 2018.
Undergraduates choose four-year B.Tech programmes in fields such as Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical and Civil Engineering, Engineering Physics and Industrial Engineering and Operations Research; five-year dual degrees; B.S. degrees in Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics and Applied Geophysics; and a B.Des. from the IDC School of Design. The recently updated curriculum adds maker-space courses, early data science and AI, and more electives inside and outside the department.
Admission is through JEE (Advanced) and JoSAA counselling, with a few places via UCEED for design and the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad. IIT Bombay is fully residential, known for Mood Indigo and a strong start-up culture through its incubator SINE. It suits students who thrive on intense competition and want a large engineering and science community in India's financial capital.

Selectivity
IIT Bombay does not publish an acceptance rate. In 2026 only the top 2,50,000 JEE (Main) candidates could sit JEE (Advanced), and seats are allotted by rank through JoSAA. Foreign nationals compete for supernumerary seats (up to 10% of each course) and need a rank at least as good as the programme's OPEN closing rank.
Typical entry requirements
| Indian Class XII (CBSE, state boards and equivalents) | JEE (Main) qualification into the top 2,50,000, then a strong JEE (Advanced) rank; Class XII with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and 75% aggregate or top 20 percentile |
|---|---|
| Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) | Direct JEE (Advanced) registration; for 2026, born on or after 1 October 2001 and first appeared in Class XII in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; maximum two attempts in consecutive years |
| B.Des. applicants | UCEED rank for the IDC School of Design |

How to apply
Indian nationals take JEE (Main), then JEE (Advanced) if they qualify, and choose IIT Bombay programmes during JoSAA counselling. Foreign nationals register directly for JEE (Advanced) and are considered for supernumerary seats through JoSAA. Design applicants apply through UCEED. DASA is not a route into IITs.
What admissions looks for
- A top JEE (Advanced) rank: seats are allotted strictly by rank and category.
- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class XII with 75% aggregate or a top-20-percentile result.
- For B.Des., a strong UCEED rank; for a few places, success in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad.
Tips for applying to IIT Bombay
- 1 Foreign nationals skip JEE (Main) and register for JEE (Advanced) directly, but must meet the age and Class XII year limits.
- 2 Look at the B.S. programmes (Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Applied Geophysics) as well as B.Tech when filling JoSAA choices.
- 3 Budget for hostel and mess on top of academic fees: 2025 entrants paid Rs 19,400 hostel fees and a Rs 22,500 mess advance per semester.
- 4 Expect the first semester to cost more than later ones: 2026 entrants paid Rs 26,000 in one-time charges and refundable deposits on top of the semester fees.
