About IIT Indore

IIT Indore was set up by the Government of India in 2009 as one of the new-generation Indian Institutes of Technology. Mentored at first by IIT Bombay and run from a temporary campus in the city, it moved to its permanent 501-acre residential campus at Simrol, on Khandwa Road outside Indore, in the mid-2010s. It is an Institute of National Importance.

Teaching is organised into ten departments (Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Engineering; Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering; Computer Science and Engineering; Chemistry; Mathematics; Physics) and schools for Humanities and Social Sciences, Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering, Sustainability and Innovation. Undergraduates take four-year B.Tech, B.S. or B.Des programmes; in 2024-25 the sanctioned UG intake was 397, and the institute reported 1,632 UG, 535 PG and about 765 PhD students in its NIRF 2026 data.

It is small and research-heavy for an IIT, with PhD students outnumbering postgraduates on taught programmes, and the institute highlights research in AI, advanced materials, communications, renewable energy, healthcare technology and sustainability. It suits JEE (Advanced) qualifiers who want a quieter, fully residential campus with close access to faculty.

Admissions

2027 entry via JEE (Advanced) 2027 and JoSAA 2027 (details shown are from the 2026 cycle)

Selectivity

IIT Indore does not publish an acceptance rate. B.Tech and B.S. seats are allotted by JEE (Advanced) rank through JoSAA counselling; the sanctioned UG intake was 397 in 2024-25. Foreign nationals compete for supernumerary seats capped at 10% of each course.

Testing Required: JEE (Advanced) for B.Tech and B.S. Indian nationals qualify through JEE (Main) first; foreign nationals do not need JEE (Main) and register for JEE (Advanced) directly.

Typical entry requirements

Indian Class XII (CBSE, state boards and equivalents)Qualify through JEE (Main), then earn a JEE (Advanced) rank high enough for your chosen IIT Indore programme in JoSAA counselling
Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F)Register directly for JEE (Advanced) without JEE (Main); seats are supernumerary, up to 10% of each course, and outside the Indian reservation categories
OCI/PIO cardholders (cards issued before 4 March 2021)May choose to compete at par with Indian nationals (OCI/PIO (I)) or as foreign nationals; the choice cannot be changed later
English language All courses are taught in English. For international applicants, IIT Indore accepts a certificate from the home institution, TOEFL, IELTS or GRE as proof of English; no minimum score is published.

  2. Fee payment for new B.Tech, B.S. and B.Des students (2026) Non-binding Passed
    24 July 2026

Previous cycle; the Autumn 2026 semester fee had to be paid in full at registration.

These are 2026-cycle dates. The JEE (Advanced) 2027 schedule and organising IIT had not been announced on the pages checked; JEE (Advanced) is usually held in May, with registration a few weeks earlier.

How to apply

Indian nationals take JEE (Main), then JEE (Advanced), and choose IIT Indore programmes during JoSAA seat allocation. Foreign nationals register directly for JEE (Advanced) and compete for supernumerary seats through JoSAA. Selected students pay the seat acceptance fee, then report to campus for registration.

What admissions looks for

  • A strong JEE (Advanced) rank: seats are allotted strictly by rank and category through JoSAA.
  • For Indian nationals, qualification through JEE (Main) to become eligible for JEE (Advanced).
  • For foreign nationals, a JEE (Advanced) rank good enough for a supernumerary seat in the chosen course.
  • Fluency in English, since all teaching is in English.

Tips for applying to IIT Indore

  1. 1 Foreign nationals can skip JEE (Main): register for JEE (Advanced) directly and target the supernumerary foreign seats.
  2. 2 OCI/PIO students with cards issued before 4 March 2021 should choose carefully between Indian and foreign status at JEE (Advanced) registration; it affects fees (Rs 1,00,000 vs Rs 3,00,000 tuition per semester).
  3. 3 Look beyond the best-known branches: IIT Indore also has departments in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Engineering and in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science.
  4. 4 Plan for full payment at registration: IIT Indore does not accept instalments.
